Rosado's Dramatic Late Goal Lifts John Carroll Past Baldwin Wallace

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – On Morgan's Message night, the John Carroll Women's Soccer team battled and conquered rival Baldwin Wallace in a physical match by a score of 1-0.

Coming into the night, JCU faced a tall task. Facing off with John Carroll was a potent Yellow Jacket offense, consisting of two of the top three leading scorers in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Senior Sydney Rice and freshman Kalyn Rich have accounted for 18 of Baldwin Wallace goals this season.

On the contrary, Blue Streak freshman goalkeeper, Madeline Martin Kosier, ranked second in the conference in save percentage (.831%) and third in total saves (49). The night was shaping up to be the classic matchup of "good offense vs good defense" between two top teams in the OAC both coming off wins. Making it extra special was that it was the annual Morgan's Message Dedication Game for JCU Women's Soccer.

Through the first five minutes of the match, each team traded chances, but both were unable to find the back of the net. At the nine minute mark, freshman defender Julia Niehaus put in a good ball that started a flow of opportunities for the Blue Streaks. The Baldwin Wallace defense stood tall through multiple chances for the next 30 minutes. JCU stayed on the attack, but the Yellow Jackets did not back down, successfully defending four consecutive corner kicks from the Blue Streaks. Their efforts resulted in a scoreless first half between the rivals, 0-0.

The Blue Streaks came out of the half firing, looking to get on the board as junior forward Emily Patrzyk barely missed inside the first five minutes. Shortly after, sophomore midfielder Abby Smith made a great pass to find junior forward Madyson Rosado, but the Baldwin Wallace goalie made a fantastic save to keep the score at double donuts.

Baldwin Wallace began to string together opportunities but Martin Kosier made a couple nice saves, with a big stop on a free kick coming off of a JCU yellow card at the 70 minute mark.

The physicality in the contest continued through the next 15 minutes, resulting in a second yellow card (and thus a red card) to sophomore defender Kathryn Shaffer. However, despite playing down a woman for the remainder of the match, the Blue Streaks stayed on the attack with close misses from Patrzyk and Rosado.

The offensive struggle would eventually end, as Rosado connected beautifully from long range to put JCU ahead with 87 seconds remaining. This proved to be the knockout blow as the defense held up in the final minutes, clinching a hard-earned victory for John Carroll, 1-0.

"On the ball, I thought to myself 'I have to be confident and go for it,'" Rosado commented. "I took a deep breath, took the shot and thankfully it went in and we got the win."

Rosado's goal was her second straight contest with a goal and third in the last two games. Madeline Martin Kosier posted her third clean sheet of the season, pushing the Blue Streaks overall record to 8-1-3.

"It's straight momentum," Rosado said. "This was such a big team win, I really think we are going to embrace this, and continue to work hard throughout the rest of the season."

John Carroll returns to the pitch Saturday night at 7 pm at Don Shula Stadium, to face Ohio Northern University, looking for their sixth straight victory. The match will be a key one, as the Blue Streaks will enter undefeated in conference play at 4-0, while the defending OAC Champs sport a 3-1 mark.
