Women's Soccer Completes First-Ever Fall Sweep of the Polar Bears

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The wind and rain could not hold back John Carroll Women's Soccer, as they defeated the Ohio Northern Polar Bears by a score of 2-1 Saturday evening.

Coming into this game, the Blue Streaks had lost the previous 10 matchups against the Polar Bears. Additionally, the other three John Carroll fall sports all beat Ohio Northern in their matchups earlier in the day, setting the stage for a potential sweep. Completing the sweep was a tall order, as Ohio Northern is the reigning OAC Champions, and came into this matchup off of a strong 3-0 win against Heidelberg on Wednesday.

The two squads went back and forth through the first couple of minutes, with JCU striking a ball into the penalty area early and Madyson Rosado struck the ball true to give the Blue Streaks an early lead four minutes in.

The physical play continued on both sides throughout the first half. Each defense stood tall, keeping possession mostly in the middle of the field and towards the edges, forcing the ball out of bounds and away from the nets.

Ohio Northern got a breakaway down the far side of the field and shot in on goal but bounced it off the keeper, with Libby Johnson taking advantage of the bounce and putting it into the back of the net, tying the game at one just 18 minutes into the first half.

The tension heated up as the night got colder, as Ohio Northern's head coach Ben Tierney received a yellow card 38 minutes into the first half.

Near the end of the half, Ohio Northern began to push the Blue Streaks into their own net, taking multiple shots on the net, but they would sail over and land on top of the net itself. John Carroll ended the first half trying to gain back momentum, with the score remaining 1-1 after 45 minutes.

With the rain beginning to lift, the second half picked up where the first half left off, as the two teams continued to trade back and forths. Both sides placed the ball clear into the penalty area at multiple points but no one was able to capitalize.

As the rain returned, John Carroll would gain the advantage a third of the way into the second half as Lucy Altieri received the pass from Emily Patrzyk into the middle and chipped in the ball from 25 yards out to give the Blue Streaks the 2-1 lead 61 minutes in.

The Polar Bears missed critical corner and free-kick opportunities halfway through the second half. This trend continued later into the half as after a corner opportunity, Ohio Northern set the ball on net, but Madeline Martin Kosier dove forward and sent the ball away from the net in dramatic fashion.

As the clock wound down, the Polar Bears began to increase their aggression, taking more penalties but also forcing the Blue Streaks to commit more penalties as well. The nature of play reflected the increase in aggression, needing to get a goal to stay in the game, but the Blue Streaks refused to let that happen. The rain stopping for the second time was not enough for the Polar Beards to mount a comeback, despite great effort on the part of Ohio Northern. The clock hit zero and the Blue Streaks held on to win 2-1.

Altieri's second-half goal was the first of her career. After the game, she spoke about her goal in the larger context of the game.

"We played a tough team, gotta go for the full 90 minutes…we really pushed ourselves, especially with the conditions given."

The Blue Streaks return to action on Wednesday to face Otterbein on the road. This match will be vital in the OAC standings, as the two teams are the top two in the conference standings, and both are undefeated in conference play.
