Volleyball Falters at Mount Union in 5-Set Thriller

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- In a mid-week Ohio Athletic Conference matchup, John Carroll Volleyball traveled to Alliance, Ohio to face the University of Mount Union. Through all five sets the Blue Streaks battled against the Purple Raiders, but ultimately fell short despite wins in the first and third sets.

The set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 13-15.

In the first set, Jennifer Follmer led the offensive charge with 5 of the team's 16 kills. Payton Miozzi and Lexi MacDonald used all efforts to cover the back half of the court, earning them countless digs to save a rally. At the net, Kendra Dziubinski placed multiple tips right into the gaps of Mount Union's defenses. John Carroll was able to hold the Raiders off and win the first set, 25-23.

Going into the second set, the Blue Streaks started off strong with many great hits. Follmer tabbed another 5 kills, with Natalie Glowe and Marissa Lynch following behind her with three each. Mary Kate Sheehan added fire to the Blue Streaks offensive efforts with kills that sent Mount Union's blocks in wild directions.

John Carroll's defense worked tirelessly to keep rallies alive, with Payton Miozzi notably throwing her body on the line to stop a kill. Despite such tremendous work done on both sides of the ball, the Purple Raiders capitalized on attack errors to win the second set, 25-20.

With a tied game going into the third set, a battle for the lead was ever present. Dziubinski and Lynch brought electricity onto John Carroll's half of the court with combined 9 kills. There to give the offense the sets they needed was Maddie Maziarz. She went on to earn 11 more assists in addition to the 15 she had tallied already. A kill from Glowe closed out the third set with a John Carroll win of 25-22.

Lynch and Follmer kicked off the fourth set with a string of lethal kills. In their combined efforts, they had 8 of the 12 kills within the set. Great blocks from the Sheehan - Glowe duo helped add to John Carroll's lead. Even though the Blue Streaks had such a dominant offensive presence, the Purple Raiders pulled off the set win with a score of 22-25.

The Blue Streaks took a quick and early 4-point lead in the fifth set, but Mount Union pushed back hard against JCU's advances. Leading the offense, Lynch fueled the team with four more kills. Follmer continued to take big attacks on the ball, forcing bad blocks on Mount Union. Even though John Carroll put up a fight, Mount Union walked away with a fifth set win with a score of 15-13.

Maddie Maziarz set a new season-high of 38 assists, which was put on the board just a few days ago at 33 against Capital. As for another season high in tonight's matchup, Marissa Lynch tallied 20 kills, her previous record for 2023 being at 17.

The Blue Streaks are on the road again on Saturday in New Concord, Ohio to face their last conference opponent, Muskingum University. A spot in the OAC Tournament will be on the line for JCU.
