Men's Basketball Kicks Off Campaign with Win over SUNY Geneseo

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- With all sorts of big events for John Carroll Athletics this weekend, the start of the season for the Men's Basketball team involved a multi-hour drive to Oneonta, New York for the Michael A. Freilich Classic.

In the first matchup of the weekend for the Blue and Gold, a massive 48-point second half helped a high-flying first win of the season for JCU against the Knights of SUNY Geneseo, 76-66.

The first 20 minutes were slow and sloppy as you might expect from the first game of the year, with plenty of empty possessions and slow play. The Knights were able to score early on, going on a 9-0 run to start the game, but the Blue Streaks countered quickly to keep within striking distance and work back into a rhythm on both sides of the ball. Both teams struggled mightily with shooting in the first half, and that led to a low-scoring 28-28 deadlock after the first 20 minutes.

A shooting slump had the Blue and Gold in a weird spot in the first, going 1-of-13 from behind the three-point line, with most of their buckets being tough layups inside. The Knights were not much better, only shooting 33% from the field in the first half, but had the rebounding edge, 24-20. The second half, however, was a completely different ball game.

The Blue Streaks came into their first game ranked #3 in the nation in D3hoops.com preseason poll. The second 20 minutes was the time for the ranked Blue Streaks to flex their muscles. JCU opened the frame with several triples to get out of the slump, and they were off to the races. A quick 14-point burst in the first three minutes netted a 6-point lead at 42-36, and once JCU grabbed the lead, they never looked back.

The advantage ballooned to as much as 14 halfway through the second frame, but the Knights never gave in, fighting to within as few as seven. It wasn't enough though, as the Blue and Gold kept Geneseo at arms length, making crucial buckets and leaving Dewar Arena with a 10 point win.

It was the Luke show in the scoresheet tonight for the Blue and Gold. All-Americans Luke Chicone and Luke Frazier led the way for the Blue Streaks, pouring in a combined 34 points, with Chicone grabbing five boards and dishing out four assists, and Frazier grabbing seven boards. Chicone's three-point shooting also helped tonight.

Chase Toppin was not far behind, putting up 11 points and five rebounds. The big man duo of Will Yontek and Henry Raynor combined to grab 16 huge rebounds, with Yontek scoring 9 and Raynor adding four. David Gentry had a huge bench contribution, adding 8 points.

The second matchup of the weekend should be a show, as the Blue Streaks will take on the hosts SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 3 pm.
