Men's Basketball Fires Past SUNY Oneonta to Finish Michael A. Freilich Classic

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- After a gritty game on a Saturday night against the Knights of SUNY Geneseo, the John Carroll Men's Basketball squad had an afternoon contest on the second day of a back to back with the hosts of the Michael A. Freilich Classic, the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta.

Tonight, the Blue Streaks came out and proved to everyone why the team sits as the third best team in the country, clipping the Red Dragons' wings on the way to a dominating 106-75 win.

The first half against the Knights of SUNY Geneseo was not pretty at times. Well, the first 20 minutes of Sunday's game did not resemble the team that walked out of the locker room Saturday at all.

From the tip, the intensity level from the Blue Streaks was on another level, and they jumped out to an early lead, scoring 14 points in the first five minutes to grab an early cushion 14-6. Through the first ten minutes, JCU retained a solid 7-point lead, putting up 21, but the final half of the opening frame saw an offensive explosion.

The tandem All-Americans Luke Chicone and Luke Frazier put on a scoring clinic, getting to rim and free throw line at will, consistently beating Oneonta defenders. The big men Will Yontek and Henry Raynor asserted themselves in the paint and got whatever they wanted, as well. The offensive explosion came with a great defensive effort, which gave the Blue Streaks a big lead at 49-31.

The message in the locker at half time was to never stop pushing and keep the intensity high. That's exactly what the Blue Streaks did in the second half, leading to yet another offensive explosion, this one even more prolific.

The Red Dragons started the second half more aggressive to match JCU, and were able to claw and at times keep pace with the speed of the Blue and Gold. They were able to creep as close as a 12-point deficit with strong drives to the rack, but they couldn't keep up.

For most of the contest, Oneonta was in a 2-3 zone, which befuddled the Blue Streaks at the end of last season. This is not the case anymore for the #3 team in the country, as the Luke's were able to slice and dice their way through the defense effortlessly, always finding the extra pass and even hitting some threes.

Sophomore Devin Burgess described the energy of the team best, as "Electric. Absolutely electric."

The phase of the game that proved to be the difference was the incredible amount of free throws that rewarded JCU's aggressiveness. The Blue Streaks shot 47 total foul shots, and ended the night with a massive win, scoring over 100 points for the first time this season, at 106-75.

With as prolific an offensive game as it was tonight, the scoring came from everywhere. The Luke's lead the way in amazing fashion, with Chicone dropping a career-high 31 points and 7 assists, and Frazier not far behind with a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Henry Raynor got his tonight as well, scoring 12 points with three rebounds. A plethora of Blue Streaks chipped in as well, with Will Yontek at 7, Brandon Rose and George Wilson at five, Sean Collins hitting a three, Luka Eller hitting two free throws, and freshman Kyle Irwin scoring his first collegiate points in his debut, adding another 2.

The Blue Streaks will continue to travel next weekend, heading to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania for the Susquehanna University Tip-off tournament, where they will look to build on the success of the first weekend.
