Women's Basketball Beats Alma to Secure Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament Title

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On the second day of John Carroll's Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament, the Blue Streaks faced the Scots of Alma College in the winner's bracket.

John Carroll Women's Basketball took the lead in the middle of the first quarter and kept the lead the rest of the game.

The Blue Streaks left their home court with a championship finish and win with a score of 60-48.

Alma started the game on a high note winning the tip and scoring the first six points of the game, but the Blue Streaks responded quickly to the pressure. Junior Maddie Pietrowski interrupted Alma's scoring drive with the team's first points.

Sophomore Kaylie McKenney scored on back-to-back plays to tie the game at 6 all. A three-pointer from Halle Landies advanced the lead in favor of John Carroll. The Blue Streaks held onto the lead for the rest of the period, with the quarter ending with a score of 13-11.

Landies found her rhythm in the second quarter and made multiple threes throughout the period. By the end of the second, Landies tallied 4 three-pointers, increasing to five points.

On the defensive side, Ava Ryncarz and Maddie Pietrowski put immense pressure on the Scots. Throughout the first half Ryncarz had 4 defensive rebounds and as for Pietrowski, she earned 3 defensive rebounds and a steal. At the half, the Blue Streaks led, 33-31.

In the third quarter, Ava Ryncarz dominated on both the offensive and defensive fronts. On back-to-back plays, Ryncarz scored, collected a rebound from the Scots and then did it all again.

Carmen Heuker also aided the Blue Streaks offensive drive with multiple assists to increase the length of the Blue Streaks lead. Halle Landies continued to have great looks toward the basket, ending the third quarter on another three pointer and improving the Blue Streaks score to 50-39.

Moving into the fourth quarter, Bella Carcioppolo aided the Blue Streaks offensive drive with a few layups and two offensive rebounds. McKenney and Pietrowski continued to score for John Carroll and widen their lead to win 60-48.

Halle Landies led the Blue Streaks on the offensive front with 21 points, all from three-point shots. This performance led her to be named the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament MVP. Carmen Heuker was also named to the All-Tournament Team for John Carroll.

Next weekend, the Blue Streaks will travel to Holland, Michigan for the Hope College Tournament. Their first game will be Friday at 7:30 pm against the Flying Dutch of Hope College.
