UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS --
A top ten showdown took place this afternoon at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity, with #1 John Carroll University hosting #6 Hampden-Sydney College from Virginia.

A large home crowd, including students and faculty, showed up during the winter break game to show their support. Both teams set the tempo early, letting fans know this would be a fast-paced and physical game all the way through.

Unfortunately in the battle of titans, the visiting Tigers dealt JCU its first loss of the campaign, an 85-67 defeat.

The Tigers may have won the tip off, but Luke Frazier struck first in points giving the Blue Streaks the first lead of the day. A full court press by the Blue Streaks put the pressure on early, forcing heavily contested shots that the home team was able to capitalize off of. Hampden-Sydney did not play light defense either, putting heavy pressure on the ball and making passing difficult. Frazier put the Streaks back in the lead with a deep three to make the score 8-5 only a few minutes into the game, but the Tigers scored the next two baskets, taking their first lead of the game. Luka Eller made his presence known down low, giving JCU the lead back. An incredible steal and assist from Jerry Higgins III followed with 12:15 left in the first half, with Luke Chicone scoring the points.

Coming out of the first timeout of the game, the Blue Streaks forced a quick turnover, but could not capitalize on it, allowing Hampton-Sydney to tie the game back up at 12 and briefly take the lead. Chase Toppin pulled out a clean spin move to once again tie the game at 18. Luka Eller gave the team the lead back with a free throw at 5:45 left in the half. Luke Frazier added three more baskets to make the score 26-18, capping off the run by him with an incredible dunk, causing H-SC to call a timeout.

Frazier did not let the timeout ice him, coming back and scoring a free throw.  Luke Chicone sank an off balance jump shot, continuing the pressure and pace. But in the final two minutes and change in the first half, Hampden-Sydney stole control.

The Tigers answered back with a three from Adam Brazil to make the score 30-29 with H-SC in the lead. Chicone did not let that lead stay long, quickly driving to the basket for a lay up. But the Tigers got the last word going into the half, with a score of 34-31.

Coming out of halftime, the Tigers scored first with a layup from Davidson Hubbard. Henry Raynor answered back with a layup of his own, but Hampden-Sydney continued to extend their lead with more shots made by Adam Brazil and Davidson Hubbard. Raynor continued to make shots for the Streaks to keep them within striking distance. Some sloppy passing and dribbling caused a few turnovers, but Will Yontek gave the new life by scoring two in a row, followed by a steal by Frazier. A huge block by Luke Frazier gave new life to the crowd, sending them to their feet.

But despite an assortment of solid plays by the Blue Streaks, including a Brandon Rose steal and score for the Blue Streaks, the Tigers dominated down the stretch and never let John Carroll back into the game. The final 24 minutes of the contest belonged to the visitors.

Luke Frazier had a stand out afternoon, scoring 19 points with 4 rebounds. Will Yontek tallied 14 points as the leading forward. Luke Chicone, the Blue Streaks' usual top scorer, ended the night with 12 points and 5 assists in 38 minutes on the court. Davidson Hubbard and Adam Brazil were the real difference makers for the Tigers today. Hubbard scored 31 points and Brazil had 24, combining for more than half of the points for the away team.

The Blue Streaks will be back after the holiday break, playing in the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic at The College of Wooster. John Carroll will play two games in the tournament, facing Wheaton College in the first round on Friday, December 29 at 5 pm.
