Records Fall in Banner Weekend for Men's Track & Field

| By:
Alex Phillip (pictured here at last week's Ashland meet) is on a tear this indoor season.
With the start of the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships just two weeks away, preparations are in high gear for the big dance.

With that mindset, John Carroll Men's Track & Field ventured to a bevy of meets to prepare.

The Blue Streaks headed to Boston, Berea, and Geneva for the weekend. Here's what transpired.

BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational
Another weekend, another record for Alex Phillip.

The John Carroll stud set another NCAA Division III record, this time late on Saturday evening in Boston. The Akron native broke the record in the 5000m after the mark was set just earlier in the day in Wisconsin.

With a time of 13:44.98, Alex Phillip is the new record holder in the 5k.

While the national DMR record was broken this weekend (Phillip was part of that record-setting relay a year ago), the St. Vincent-St. Mary grad now holds two NCAA Division III indoor track records. Earlier this season, Phillip shattered the 3000m record with a time of 7:53.24.

In other words, Phillip continues to add on the accolades that cement him amongst the best Blue Streaks and the best runners in NCAA D-III history.

Earlier on Saturday, things began with a nice start for the Blue Streaks in Boston.

Caleb Correia re-broke his record in the 800m with a time of 1:51.53. That time is nearly a second better than his PR from last season. Correia continues to show improvement, as his ceiling is not yet reached.

Later in the day, Ethan Domitrovich toed the line in a packed field in the mile. He claimed a time of 4:18.54.

Just before Phillip raced, Tommy Naiman cut 10 seconds from his previous best in the 3000m. He continued his strong season with a time of 8:29.00 in the 3k.

BW Mid-February Meet
The dominance in the throws proved to be the story of Friday for the Blue Streaks. Vince Minniti's crew is soaring at the right time of year.

The Blue Streaks achieved a 1-2-3 sweep in the weight throw. Zach Szafarski, Noah Schroeder, and Matthew Russo did the honors. Szafarski led the pack with a top toss of 16.07m. Schroeder achieved a major PR with a heave of 14.80m. Russo completed the sweep with a distance of 14.75m. Alec Gorman took 10th (12.05m).

John Carroll got a similarly strong production in the shot put. This time, it was Russo's time to lead the way, as the New Yorker won the event with a toss of 14.64m. Szafarski followed him closely in second with a mark of 14.32m. Schroeder achieved third with a heave of 12.92m.

The Blue Streaks owned the 500m. Tyler Gast has burst onto the scene this year, as he now owns the team's best mark in the event. The former JCU Baseball player won the event with a time of 1:08.28. Evan Piscitani nipped at his heels in second at 1:08.66. Brody Hanlan and Michael Hvizdos completed the 1-2-3-4 sweep with respective times of 1:08.76 and 1:10.02. Joe Scherer rounded out the back in seventh at 1:12.56.

Mike Shipman won the day in the 1000m. His PR of 2:35.34 proved to be enough to conquer the field in the event. Owen Roberts also impressed, shaving nearly six seconds off from the last time he ran the event in late January, clocking in at 2:41.56 for fourth.

Luke Del Rosso repped JCU in the 400m, tabbing a time of 57.39 for fourth. Evan Smith also donned the Blue & Gold in the event, registering a time of 59.48.

Spire Collegiate Indoor Games
Basheer Alramahi continued to show off his speed today. The youngster dashed to a time of 48.48 in the 400m, which beat Garrett Clark's best last year, though not Clark's current best mark of 48.21. In doing so, the freshman finished first in the field, composed of largely Division I and Division II runners. Alramahi, a track newbie, is indeed a budding star to watch moving forward.

Speaking of young stars, Dustin Horner tallied a 12th place finish in the 400m with a time of 50.41. Mick Doyle and Victor Ononogbo tallied respective times of 51.40 and 51.94 in the event.

Sticking with the sprints, Garrett Clark tabbed a time of 7.00 in the 60m prelims, clinching a spot in the finals, but he did not run in them. Jimmy Kartsonas barely missed the cut with a time of 7.08. Mike Jones also missed out on the final race, but did hit a PR with a time of 7.60.

Daylen Glaze tabbed a time of 9.04 in the 60m hurdles, finishing 14th.

In the 800m, John Shoemaker led the JCU contingent with a time of 1:56.40, good for 11th. Ian Paul and Joe Scherer clocked respective times of 1:56.66 and 2:02.25.

Max Grillo finished just outside the top 10 in the mile, tapping his way around the track in 4:18.56. Jacob Gerhardt finished 25th in 4:29.51.

Dominic Delmoro hit a PR in the 3000m for the Blue Streaks. He finished fifth with a time of 8:40.24.
