Women's Basketball Falls at Wilmington But Still Headed to the OAC Tournament

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Even though the John Carroll Women's Basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss, the Blue Streaks will make the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

After a dominating first half of play on both ends of the court, John Carroll found themselves with a commanding six-point lead heading into halftime, 33-27.

But the Quakers came out in the second half with a strong effort, earning a 70-61 victory.

The Blue Streaks played well in the opening half, knowing that a win would mean a bid to the OAC Tournament. But after JCU enjoyed a 17-10 lead in the first, Wilmington started to find some momentum in the second quarter.

And then, the Quakers turned the tides in the second half. Wilmington found their success through dominating down low in the post, as they would win the rebound battle, 49-36. Along with a scoring run by the Quakers late in the third quarter, JCU found themselves tied up at 47 going into the last quarter of play.

All the momentum built up from the third quarter was carried into the fourth, which gave Wilmington a commanding lead for the rest of the game. And with 44 seconds left, star Kaelyn Underwood would foul out, effectively ending JCU chances of making a comeback.

Despite this, Underwood finished the contest with a team-high 20 points and two blocks.

It was sophomores Olivia Giunta and Maddie Pietrowski coming off the bench that kept the momentum going for JCU in the second half. The duo would combine for 21 points.  In ten minutes of play, Giunta would rack up 12 points from the field.

However, the show goes on for the Blue Streaks.

JCU Women's Basketball still qualifies for the OAC Tournament, and they will open things up with the quarterfinals on Tuesday at Baldwin Wallace.
