Women's Basketball Clipped by Cardinals Despite Strong Fight in Westerville

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In an Ohio Athletic Conference mid-week matchup, John Carroll Women's Basketball headed to Otterbein for their second matchup against the Cardinals of the season.

Tonight, the Cardinals walked away with a win in an evenly-played contest. The Blue Streaks dropped a 62-61 nailbiter to Otterbein despite a strong late effort.

The Blue Streaks dropped to 11-10 overall, 6-8 in OAC play.

Otterbein struck fast and struck first with a 3-point play made by Natalie Allen. JCU took a while to answer Otterbein's opening 7-point run, as a layup made by freshman Maddie Pietrowski marked JCU's first bucket at 5:55. JCU battled to close the gap, ending the first quarter with a 7-4 run, thanks to a late Kaelyn Underwood basket and an Ava Ryncarz 3-pointer. The cardinals held a 17-11 lead after the opening quarter.

The Blue Streaks blasted off to start the second quarter, firing up a 7-0 run powered in part by a Ryncarz 3-pointer. Thanks to the fiery start, the Blue Streaks managed to take a modest lead that lasted much of the quarter. But Otterbein's offense got back in it late, with an 8-0 run setting ahead the Cardinals with a 31-26 lead.

Starting the last 20 minutes of regulation, the women from Otterbein came out with new energy. They quickly expanded their lead with 12 points in the first five minutes, giving them a lead of 43-33. The Blue Streaks never give up and proved it during the 3rd quarter. A technical foul against the Cardinals gave JCU new life. The Blue Streaks rolled to a 6-point run to end the quarter, as Jaylen Hoffmann scored to end the quarter giving her 7 points at that point in the night. The score at entering the last quarter was 47-42 Otterbein.

The last 10 minutes were the hardest fought of the game, neither team wanting to concede this important game with standings implications on the line. Both teams battled to stay in the game, exchanging the lead six times in the last quarter. The Women of Carroll fought hard but came up short with a score of 62-61 to end the contest.

A clutch Pietrowski 3-pointer with 8 seconds left tied the game at 61-all. But a foul on the ensuing Otterbein possession gave the Cardinals a shot to win the game with free throws and they did, sinking one to win it.

Standouts of the game for the Blue Streaks were Kaelyn Underwood with 14 points, Ava Ryncarz with 12, and Jaylen Hoffman with 11. Hoffman also added 4 rebounds to tonight. For the Cardinals, Katie McCrary ended the game with 19 points.

Looking deeper into the box score, Carmen Heuker contributed a season-best 12 rebounds. John Carroll outshot Otterbein, 35.4%-32.3%, and outrebounded them, 40-38. The Cardinals critically managed to get to the foul line more, however, shooting 20-for-25 compared to JCU's 10-for-16 from the charity stripe.

JCU Women's Basketball is back in action away at Ohio Northern on Saturday then at home against Heidelberg on Monday for a rescheduled game.
