Blue Streak Offense Hot and Cold in Split With Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The John Carroll baseball team made a trip to Virginia to take on the University of Mary Washington on St. Patrick's Day weekend. The Blue Streaks found some luck on the trip and came away with a split in their Saturday double header, winning 13-7 in game one and losing 15-2 in game two.

Game 1

There was only one hit between the two teams after the conclusion of the second inning, but John Carroll broke the silence in the top of the third. Back to back hits had two men in scoring position to start the inning. Then, Sean Connolly delivered the first run of the game with an RBI double. Justin Hanley quickly built on the team's success with an RBI single of his own. With two runners on again, Hanley and Connolly went for the double steal. Connolly was able to make his way all the way home following an error by the Eagles catcher and go up 3-0.

After a scoreless stand in the home half of the inning, the Blue Streaks came back to the dish and delivered an explosive inning. After two RBI hits from Michael Perischetti and Connolly, Hanley once again came up to bat this time with bases loaded. The Florida native did not disappoint, as he launched a towering shot beyond the left field wall for a grand slam and closed the scoring on the inning with six runs to extend the lead, 9-0.

The round tripper marked the 19th of the graduate student's career, as he moved past JCU Hall of Famer Craig Recko into sole possession of second all-time in program history.

Ty Lowe of the Eagles delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, but in the top of the fifth Joe Olsavsky, playing in his first game of the season after recovering from an injury, brought an RBI double of his own to maintain a nine run advantage for his team.

The game remained 10-1 until the eighth inning when once again John Carroll added runs to their tally with back to back RBI hits from Jack Harmon and Connor Mayle to go up 12-1.

The Eagles were able to push across a run with an RBI single from Jacob Christ. Matthew Aukerman would retire two batters in the inning before a call to the bullpen was made. The two runners he left on would come around to score on two straight RBI singles, so he finished another impressive performance this season, giving up four runs on six hits. The Senior also added seven strikeouts in his 7.2 innings of work.

After the two singles, an RBI triple would have the Blue Streaks going back to the bullpen. Garrett Siegel, came in and looked to stop the bleeding late in the game. Siegel would allow Noah Roots to single, for the second time in the inning, and drive in the runner on third. Siegel would bounce back quickly by striking out the next batter and putting an end to a six run inning for Mary Washington. Even through the explosion John Carroll still led, 12-7.

The Blue Streaks added one for good measure in the ninth with a sacrifice fly from Bryce Holt, and Siegel set down the Eagles in order to end the game.

Game 2

Mary Washington carried some momentum from their eighth inning spark in game one as they scored early and often in game two.

Blue Streak starter John Gavric struggled with his command early in the game. In the home half of the second inning, the junior walked in a pair of runs and left JCU in a 2-0 hole to start the game.

In the third, another walk began the inning. Then a single and defensive error from John Carroll allowed another run to find its way into the Eagles portion of the scoreboard. The runners, now on second and third, would be driven in by back to back sacrifice flies as the score read 5-0 in favor of Mary Washington.

The Blue Streaks decided to go to the bullpen early and bring in Alex Wu in the fourth. Unfortunately for the Virginia native Wu, the Eagles were simply hot. A strikeout and two walks brought Bobby Ayscue to the plate, and he pounded a ball over the left field wall for a three-run home run and made it 8-0 Eagles.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mary Washington's Ryan Schwarz reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Tim Blakens promptly singled to drive in the run and make it 9-0.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Samuel Basso came on to pitch for the Blue Streaks and command issues, once again an issue, for John Carroll in this game. A single, walk, and hit batter left the bases loaded and another run was walked in. Basso would escape with that being the lone run given up, but the game was 10-0.

The JCU offense would finally respond off the back of a pair of errors by the Eagles that allowed Joe Olsavsky to cross the plate in the eighth, making it 10-1.

Another five runs would be pushed across in the home half of the eighth for the Eagles, highlighted by a three RBI double from Blakens to make it 15-1 in favor of UMW.

Hanley would end the game on a positive note for the Blue Streaks by hitting a solo shot in the ninth, but the Blue Streaks were retired with nothing more.

John Carroll and Mary Washington will both be back in action tomorrow, March 19th at 12:00pm for the conclusion of the three game series.
