Baseball Falls to Mary Washington in Virginia

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The John Carroll baseball team was held in check in a forgettable 10-3 loss over Mary Washington, as they drop two out of their three games against the Eagles.

Jon Ambro started on the mound for the Blue Streaks, and gave up a walk to the Eagles leadoff hitter, Jacob Christ. Then, it was a single and wild pitch out of the graduate student. This allowed for Ty Lowe to hit a sacrifice fly to left field and bring in UMW's first run.

Ambro was able to retire the Eagles lineup in order in both the second and third innings. However, his control troubles seemed to find him again in the fourth.

The inning began with a bases loaded and no outs jam, as Noah Roots capitalized with an RBI single. A 1-2 fielder's choice would put an out on the board and stop another run from coming home, but the Eagles quickly rattled off two more runs with a Tim Blankens single. Another wild pitch and walk would end Ambro's day after just 3.1 innings.

Sylvan Wiley came in for relief for John Carroll. A fielder's choice allowed another run to come in after the first batter Wiley faced. Then, a walk and infield single by Bobby Ayscue brought another run in before the inning was finally ended by a groundout. All the runs went on Ambro as he finished with six earned runs allowed on just four hits. The Eagles lead after four innings had inflated to 6-0.

Mary Washington would just continue to lay it on in the sixth and seventh innings with RBI hits from Ayscue and Jonathan Sed. The runs came off of several John Carroll pitchers and for the second game in a row, and it was 10-0 after seven innings of play.

While JCU's pitching staff struggled to find their best stuff, the Eagles were getting one of the best performances on the mound this season. Jackson Myers went eight innings without allowing a run, and only surrendering a single hit. The freshman set down 13 Blue Streaks on strikes.

The only thing that stood between John Carroll and being no-hit, up to this point, was a Connor Mayle double in the top of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, and trailing by 10, the JCU offense was now facing Griffin Graham. The sophomore was able to record two quick outs, only allowing a walk in between. A hit by pitch put a second runner on and allowed Justin Hanley to salvage a run with a RBI single. A wild pitch put both remaining runners in scoring position and Jack Beiter drove in both with an RBI single of his own. The two out magic would end there, as the final out was recorded on a fly ball along the third baseline.

JCU will look to get back to its winning ways as they will travel to Case Western Reserve in Cleveland on Tuesday, March 21 at 4 pm.
