Eighth Inning Barrage Leads to JCU Loss

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The John Carroll baseball team, in its first game played in the state of Ohio this season, gave up five runs in the eighth inning after a 3-3 tie as the Case Western Reserve Spartans took down the Blue Streaks, 8-3, at Nobby's Ballpark.

The first three innings of the matchup only saw three hits between the two squads, as Jamon Higley and Matthew DuBois were both dealing early for their respective clubs.

John Carroll kicked off the scoring in the top of the fourth. A pair of Blue Streaks got plunked while recording an out before Jared Orwell smashed a single to center to bring in the game's first run. The senior would be caught stealing in the next at-bat, so just a runner remained at third.

Jordan Suvak would then deliver a two out single to tack on an extra run. Erik Daugenti looked to keep things going with a double, but with two runners in scoring position, John Carroll failed to punch in any more runs but led, 2-0.

In the home half of the inning, a pair of singles left the Spartans with runners on the corners. Higley would force a double play that allowed a run to come across, but it would be the only runs mustered for Case Western in that inning, as they trailed 2-1.

However, it would only take till the next inning for the Spartans to get back on the board, starting with a lead-off single and a walk which ended the day for Higley.

Unfortunately, it didn't stop the bleeding.

After recording an out, Matt Campbell walked the next hitter, which setup Zack Carinci to hit a two-RBI double into left field. Case Western now led 3-2.

John Carroll would bounce back, but not until the seventh inning. Joe Olsavsky singled, and a walk pushed him to second. Connor Mayle came through when it counted, delivering a RBI single. The hit tied the game 3-3, but the inning ended with a groundout.

The game was in the balance and just when it seemed either team could snag the win, the Spartans took it and ran. Roger Simon took over on the mound and was able to record an immediate two outs. Then, a walk and slue of hits from Sean Donahue, Owen Levison, and Jack Anderson toppled on five runs. The barrage gave Case Western the 8-3 lead, and ultimately the victory.

With the loss, John Carroll falls to 10-6, while Case Western climbs to 8-6. John Carroll will be back in action on March 25th in their OAC debut with a double header against Otterbein in Westerville.
