Blue Streaks Make Most of OAC Debut With Sweep of Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The John Carroll baseball team kicked off OAC play with a double header against the Otterbein Cardinals. JCU was able to sweep the twin bill in Westerville by scores of 11-3 and 7-4.

Game 1

The Blue Streaks looked to pile things on the Cardinals right out of the gates. A lead off single and hit by pitch allowed Justin Hanley to drive home the game's first run with an RBI single to the left side of the infield, putting John Carroll up 1-0 in the top of the first.

After a 1-2-3 home half of the inning, the Blue Streaks once again tacked on a run with a Joe Olsavsky double down the left field line to make the game 2-0.

A single from Logan LaMere in the third and doubles from Jack Harmon and Hanley in the fourth tallied four more runs for John Carroll and extended their lead to 5-0.

The fifth proved to be another Blue Streak inning through and through as Olsavsky singled through the left side of the infield again to score LaMere, who reached with a leadoff single. The junior advanced to second on an error from the Otterbein left fielder. The error allowed Olsavsky to come around and score on a Connor Mayle single down the right field line. The lead now inflated to seven runs at the halfway point in the contest.

John Carroll was finally shut down in the sixth, but picked things right back up in the seventh. Erik Daugenti was hit by a pitch to start the frame, which directly led to an additional run when Mayle blasted a ball over the left field wall and upped the damage to 9-0.

The Cardinals were finally able to get things going in the bottom of the seventh when a pair of walks aided in loading the bases, and their first run was scored on a Brayden Carter sacrifice fly. The inning would end with the score 9-1.

JCU couldn't allow the run to go unanswered in this game, so Harmon touched home plate off a LaMere double to left field in the eighth. The run was the Blue Streak's tenth of the ballgame.

A flyout and single from Gavin Wolf, who would score on a Max Latkovski two-RBI single in the home half of the eighth, ended another outstanding Matthew Aukerman performance. The senior allowed two runs on four hits and set down seven Cardinals on strikes. The runs brought the game's score to 10-3.

Another Olsavsky single in the top of the ninth added a run on for good measure and closed out the scoring at 11-3 with a John Carroll win.

Garrett Siegel locked things down for the Blue Streaks down the stretch by not allowing a hit through 1.1 innings.

Game 2

Otterbein looked to flip the script in the second half of the Sunday double header when they pushed across an odd run in the bottom of the second. Two hits had runners on first and third. Jon Ambro was able to pick off the runner on first, but the Blue Streaks traded a run for an out as Gavin Thompson was able to cross the plate before the tag was applied. The Cardinals led after two innings, 1-0.

Back to back singles in the top of the third brought up Mayle with two outs, and he delivered with an RBI single to knot the game at one.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the seventh when the Blue Streaks bats came alive. Daugenti came alive with an RBI double in the inning to score Sean Connolly, who singled in the inning. An error and intentional walk of Olsavsky loaded the bases for Bryce Holt who came up huge for John Carroll with a bases clearing double. Justin Hanley decided four wasn't enough, so he singled to bring home Holt. The outburst put JCU on top 6-1.

Otterbein chipped away in the eighth with an RBI double from Wolf, but John Carroll reset the lead with a Mayle solo shot, his second home run of the day, making the score 7-2.

Ambro was able to pitch his way to two outs in the ninth, but a two-run bomb from Sam Roy followed by a walk would end his outing just an out short of a complete game. The graduate student allowed four runs, three earned, on just six hits. Roger Simon was brought into the 7-4 game to record the final out, and did so with a strikeout to the first batter he faced.

The Blue Streaks will head to Wooster for a non-conference showdown with the Scots on Wednesday, March 29 at 4:00 pm.
