Offense Lights Up In Action Packed, Five Inning Win At Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The John Carroll baseball team took to the road in a non-conference matchup with the Wooster Fighting Scots. The weather stopped the action after just five innings, but there was no lack of excitement due to the shortage of game, as the Blue Streaks took home the win, 15-11.

The scoring started in the first inning, and there wouldn't be much of a break after that. After Connor Mayle became the first player in the game to find himself on base, Justin Hanley ripped a single into left field to score the game's inaugural run. JCU would tack on two more in the inning thanks to a Sean Connolly two-RBI double. John Carroll led after their first at-bats, 3-0.

Jamon Higley didn't have his best day on the bump for the Blue Streaks. He struggled with his command in his only inning of work. A walk and hit by pitch were responsible for two of the five runs that he surrendered. Dean Brown and Dan Hanson also put balls into play to aid in the five run inning for the Wooster.

Jack Beiter accounted for the lone Blue Streak run in the second inning with a solo blast into right field. The long ball brought John Carroll within a run heading to the home half of the frame.

Following a scoreless inning from the Fighting Scots, JCU was right back to business in the third inning. The team would push across the game-tying run without putting a ball into play, as they earned a hit by pitch and three walks, while only recording a single out. The lead would officially change hands when Joe Olsavsky hit a sacrifice line drive to left field. Mayle would pull a single through the left side of the infield for a team-leading 18th RBI on the season. The three runs would put John Carroll on top, 7-5.

It turned out that the Blue Streak lead was short lived in the third inning as Grant Mitchell punched a ball beyond the right field wall for three RBIs, making the score 8-7 in favor of the Fighting Scots.

In the fourth inning it was, yet again, more runs for JCU. Logan LaMere reached on a fielder's choice and Connolly lifted a ball to right center field for a two-run bomb to make it 9-7 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Wooster was held in check once more in the bottom of the fourth inning. This allowed John Carroll to deliver its final blow, even though they weren't quite aware of it yet. JCU piled on five runs courtesy of an Olsavsky two-run home run (his first of the season), LaMere walk, and Erik Daugenti RBI single. The six run inning built an eight run cushion for the Blue Streaks.

The Fighting Scots gave one last effort in the home half of the fifth by pushing across three runs with a two-RBI single from Leo Widtmann and RBI base knock from Brown. Unfortunately for Wooster, that's all they would find in the fifth before the game was called early due to inclement weather.

John Carroll hosts its first home game of the season against Muskingum in a double header on Saturday, April 1 starting at 1:00pm.
