In Northeast Ohio Debut, Softball Splits with Hiram on the Road

HIRAM, Ohio -- Following a tough weather week, John Carroll Softball returned to action in Northeast Ohio on Tuesday.

The Blue Streaks confronted Hiram College after a 4-season lapse in the series of local squads (JCU leads the all-time series now, 40-17). Hits were at a premium in the road contests, as the Blue Streaks dropped the opener, 6-1, before rebounding with a 1-0 victory in the second contest.

The Blue Streaks advance to 8-4 on the year heading into Thursday's road doubleheader at Waynesburg.

Game 1
The Blue Streaks got off to a hot start at the plate in the top of the first. Alyssia Carmichael singled and Kaylyn Odelli walked to start the threat. After a fielder's choice, Melissa Smith provided a clutch single to right to score Odelli. Hiram got out of the jam with just one run allowed.

Danielle Orendi cruised in the opening two frames, with 1-2-3 innings in both the first and the second. But the Terriers got on the board in the third, sneaking ahead, 2-1. An opening single in the fourth led to a pitching change, but the runner still came around to score for an insurance run.

The Blue Streaks threatened in both the fifth and the sixth, with a hit in each inning, but runners were stranded due to clutch Hiram pitching. In the bottom of the sixth, the Terriers plated three on a 1-out homer to left. Brianna Callow entered and quelled the tides, but the wave of runs overtook the Blue Streaks, who got a couple aboard in the seventh but did not score.

Smith, JCU's freshman catcher, accounted for half of JCU's hits with a 3-for-3 game. Gracie Bressoud tallied two hits of her own. JCU stranded eight runners for the game.

Game 2
Each team went quietly in the first inning, with three-up, three-down frames. Callow got the starting nod for JCU and looked excellent in the circle.

In the second, the Blue Streaks scratched across what became the winning run. Melissa Smith started by singling to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kasyn Scarantine advanced her to third with a single through the right side. Lexie Genovese then singled to score Smith. A Kendall Trunzo walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Hiram garnered a lineout to strand three JCU runners.

Callow surrendered a single in the third, along with a walk and a single in the fourth. But the sophomore stood tall and prevented any damage.

After JCU left two runners on the pond in the fifth, Danielle Orendi took the circle for the bottom of the inning. The Pittsburgher allowed a couple singles, but no more. Following a quick JCU sixth, Orendi allowed a 2-out walk but easily got out of the inning with a groundout. Tora Walters garnered a pinch-hit walk to open the seventh, but Hiram eked out a double play to stop the effort for an insurance run before it started.

The Terriers made it interesting in the seventh. Hiram tallied two singles to kick off the frame. A sacrifice bunt placed the tying and winning run in scoring position with one out. But the Blue Streaks got a groundout to get the lead runner and then a flyout to sneak away from Hiram with the W.

Callow and Orendi combined for a 6-hit shutout. Callow got the win to advance to 4-0 on the season. JCU's hitters managed three hits and three walks.

"I thought our pitchers did a great job spotting the ball," said Head Coach Alex Lagesse. "Bri was very efficient and I thought she used a good mix of pitches today. At the plate, we hit balls hard but just right at people."

The Blue Streaks look to return to action on Thursday at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania, weather permitting.
