Softball Snags Sweep of Kenyon on Sunday at CWRU's Mather Park

CLEVELAND -- After changing the venue of the John Carroll Softball "home" opener to nearby Case Western Reserve University's Mather Park due to the field conditions at Bracken Field, the Blue Streaks were still looking to capitalize on the hometown crowd in a doubleheader versus the Kenyon College Owls.

The Blue Streaks did that, with wins by scores of 3-2 and 6-3.

With the sweep, the Blue Streaks advance to 10-4 on the season, the quickest the program has tallied 10 wins since 2013.

Game 1
The Owls came out strong to open the game. Natalya Delsante doubled with a hit down the left-field line. Allison McCutchen hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing Delsante. The Owls' next two batters got out with a strikeout and a foul out.

The Blue Streaks' bats were hot in the bottom of the first. Gracie Bressoud walked to get onto first, stealing second to put her in a scoring position with Alyssia Carmichael up at bat. A single up the middle by Carmichael brought Bressoud home, advancing to second on the throw.

Kaylyn Odelli was walked by the Owls' pitcher, with Carmichael advancing to third. Odelli and Carmichael were able to each steal a base, with Carmichael taking home to tally another run to JCU's score. Odelli advanced to third on a groundout by Nina Scavelli, with Gabby Hougan bringing her in on a hard hit to right center to wrap up scoring in the first inning with a score of 3-0.

Kenyon was eager to cut the John Carroll lead in the second inning. A key advance to third on a wild pitch earned the Owls a run, but the Blue Streak offense was able to hold the score to 3-1.

Both teams' defenses tightened up in the middle stretch of the game, keeping the score at 3-1.

The Owls managed to break the dry spell in the top of the fifth. Danielle Orendi had been solid on the mound in the first four innings, and Emily Graves took over on the mound. A single by Kenyon's Nicole Archambeau tallied another run late in the top of the fifth inning, ending scoring for the opener at 3-2.

John Carroll's offense slowed down at the end of the game, but their defense held strong. With a Kenyon runner at second, a flyout to right field led to a beautiful double play, as Carmichael made the long throw from right field to Lexie Genovese at third base to wrap up the first game with a score of 3-2.

Danielle Orendi claimed the win for the Blue Streaks, striking out three batters out of 17 batters faced.

Game 2
Fueled by their first win, the Blue Streaks looked to take the second game as well.

With strong bats and stronger defense, the Blue Streaks took the second game with a score of 6-3.

JCU tallied a run first in the bottom of the first. Kendall Trunzo got on first with a single to right field. Alyssia Carmichael cracked a double to left center, with Trunzo advancing to third. A sacrifice fly by Odelli earned the RBI, with Trunzo scoring to make it a 1-0 game.

The Blue Streaks' defense held firm in the first and second inning, with the Owls not getting a hit in either inning. Brianna Callow was on fire in the first two frames, leading the count at each of the first six at-bats.

Bats for the Owls and the Blue Streaks came alive in the third. Maddie Friday of Kenyon soared one over the fence in right-center to open the third inning and tie the game. Shaking it off, the Blue Streaks' offense was able to hold the Owls to the homer.

Trunzo walked with a single by Carmichael to advance her to second. Odelli fouled out deep into right field, but a bad throw and an error advanced the runners to allow Trunzo to score again.

With Carmichael on second and Mackenzie Stease on first after being hit by a pitch, Jess Lichota flew out to advance Carmichael to third and put her in scoring position. A passed ball by the Owls allowed Carmichael to reach home and give the Blue Streaks a 3-1 lead.

Scoring stalled for both teams in the fourth inning, but the Blue Streaks were not done yet.

The Owls changed pitchers, but could not stop the Blue Streaks. Odelli walked and advanced to second on a single by Stease. Lichota singled to left to load the bases for the Blue & Gold.

Serena Paterno reached first on a fielder's choice, bringing in Odelli. Genovese singled to the right, and, with aggressive running by Lichota and Stease, the Blue Streaks advanced their lead to 6-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Owls were determined to catch up to the Blue Streaks. With a runner on second, an error by the Blue Streaks allowed Kenyon to score early in the inning.

After an outstanding performance by Brianna Callow, Danielle Orendi reclaimed her spot on the mound with runners on first and second. An unearned run at the end of the top of the sixth cut the JCU lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Streaks had runners on third twice, but they could not reach home plate.

The JCU defense held strong in the seventh inning, claiming their second win of the day and sweeping the Owls with a final score of 6-3.

Callow and Orendi combined for seven strikeouts on the day, with four strikeouts looking (one and three respectively). Paterno led the team in putouts with eight.

Carmichael led the way on offense, combining for six hits for the day.

"We've been working on keeping our weight back and timing up the pitcher, no matter who's throwing, just syncing hips and hands together," said Carmichael. "A sweep on a Sunday feels good. It's a great momentum swing heading into OAC play next weekend. I'm excited to see what we do. I'm proud of this team. The energy is good, good vibes all around."

The Blue Streaks will travel to New Concord to take on the Muskingum Fighting Muskies and open OAC play with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1st with games at 1 pm and 3 pm.
