Home Runs Heat Blue Streaks’ Offense in Sweep of Trine During Florida Debut

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- After scoring a combined 33 runs in their first three games of the season against Allegheny, the John Carroll baseball team continued to stay warm like the heat of the Sunshine State as they won both games (8-1 and 8-3, respectfully) with a combined six round trippers and stellar pitching against Trine in their first twin bill of the annual Florida trip.

Game 1

JCU did not wait to strike against the Thunder, as Erik Daugenti hit an RBI single to score Sean Connolly from second just two batters into the first inning.  However, the bats went cold for both teams after as 15 of the next 16 hitters were retired combined.

Trine was able to muster a run to tie the game in the sixth on a Jacob Medves groundout, but the Blue Streak bats mimicked the warmth of the Florida sun in the bottom frame with seven runs.

Bryce Holt sparked JCU with a solo shot to break the tie for good and four batters later, Connor Mayle hit a grand slam to left field to go up 6-1.  Mayle's grand slam was the team's first since Matt Cassaro did it against Fitchburg State during the Florida trip last season.

Two batters later, Sean Connolly hit his first career home run which brought home Logan LaMere for the final runs of the game.

Matthew Aukerman pitched very effectively for the Blue Streaks, going all seven innings and allowed only three hits, no walks, and striking out six.  He also had a perfect game until Daniel Rumbe broke it up on a single as the first batter of the sixth.

Connolly, Harmon, and Justin Hanley each had two hits for JCU as well.

Game 2

Back-to-back-to-back dingers in the fourth got John Carroll on the board, as Holt started off the scoring with a two run shot to right field.  Next up was Hanley, as he mashed his to left field.  Finally, Jack Harmon hit his first career round tripper on a moonshot to left to take a 4-0 advantage.

Rumbe hit into a double play to score Easton Rhodes in the fifth, as Trine scored their first run of the game while Holt touched the plate for JCU on a Harmon groundout in the sixth to make it 5-1.

The Thunder started to make it interesting in the bottom frame, as they tacked on two runs on a Rhodes single and a Tyler Beyke walk with the bases loaded to close within two.

However, JCU answered right back in the seventh with a Daugenti RBI triple and Holt RBI single for the game's final scores.

Holt led the way for JCU with three hits and three RBIs.  Hanley and Daugenti also had multiple hits for the Blue Streaks.

Jon Ambro pitched 5.2 innings and had a no hitter going until Beyke broke it up on a single in the fifth.  The graduate student also struck out four and only gave up three hits.  Owen Gerba finished off the final 1.1 frames by only allowing a hit and a walk.

John Carroll will look to keep the bats hot in a double header with Ursinus at Lake Myrtle Park Field #3 in Auburndale on Monday, March 6.  First pitch for Game 1 is set for 3:15pm.
