Softball Strolls to Pair of Run-Rule Victories in Productive Florida Monday

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- John Carroll Softball is on a tear through the first two days of the season.

The Blue Streaks rocketed past Clark University, 8-0, and Alverno College, 10-0 in a dominant Monday showing.

John Carroll now stands at 4-0 on the year, the team's best start in over a decade. To be exact, it's the best start since the 2012 season when JCU won six straight to open the campaign. In other words, the very early days of the Alex Lagesse era are off to a great start.

Game 1
The Blue Streaks got off to a strong start in the first. After Danielle Orendi rolled through the Clark lineup, Gracie Bressoud led off for JCU with a walk. She quickly rounded the bases thanks to a stolen base some wild pitches. Mackenzie Stease got on base with a hit by pitch and soon got home thanks to an error and a wild pitch.

With a 2-0 lead, Orendi cruised in the circle. Through four innings, the Pittsburgh native had a perfect game going.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Serena Paterno got things going with a single through the left side. Bella Carcioppolo pinch ran for Paterno and quicky moved to second on a Kasyn Scarantine single. While the Cougars coaxed a double play, Carcioppolo scored on a passed ball, and the Blue Streaks stood ahead by three runs.

Clark ended Orendi's bid for perfection with a single in the top of the fifth. But Orendi tabbed two strikeouts and a popout to get out of things unscathed.

The Blue Streaks added a couple more tallies to the run column in the fifth. Kendall Trunzo jumpstarted the offense with a triple to left, and a Mackenzie Stease double to center got Trunzo home. Stease snuck to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Serena Paterno RBI groundout. JCU carried a 5-0 margin into the sixth.

"These are good pitchers, so we're just getting the bat on the ball and our bats just keep moving," said Stease. "It's been great. I've been out [from softball] for a year and a half, so the feeling of hitting the ball again is amazing. It's good to be back."

After Orendi mowed down three Cougars, the Blue Streaks decided to end things early. Lexie Genovese walked to open the frame and got to second on a wild pitch. Alyssia Carmichael knocked a double to left to plate Genovese. Bressoud then singled up the middle to plate Carmichael, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Trunzo toed the box and clipped a sacrifice fly to score Bressoud and conclude the ballgame.

Seven different Blue Streaks tallied baseknocks, with Bressoud and Traub each accounting for two. Bressoud and Paterno also tabbed stolen bases.

Orendi finished with a 6-inning complete game, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 8 Cougars in a masterful effort. The Upper St. Clair grad was nearly perfect in the morning affair, as her heater was simply too much for Clark.

Game 2
Both John Carroll and Alverno got base runners on in the first, but neither crossed home. Kaylyn Odelli got a double but was stranded at first. And then, Melissa Smith cut down a runner at third trying to steal in the first, keeping an opening walk from hurting JCU.

The Blue Streaks snuck one across in the second. Lexie Genovese took a pitch on the elbow with two outs and then moved to second on an Elaina Rodriguez single. Kendall Trunzo worked her magic with an RBI single, pushing JCU into the lead, which they'd never relent.

Brianna Callow found her mojo in the circle quickly, striking out the side in the third. In the top of the fourth, John Carroll took full control of the contest.

Nina Scavelli kicked off the fun with a single to center. Rodriguez singled and Trunzo walked to load the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored one run and a Gracie Bressoud RBI groundout got a couple home. And then, Alyssia Carmichael and Odelli tabbed an RBI apiece on clutch 2-out hits, setting the lead at 5-0 JCU.

In the fifth, the Blue Streaks quickly loaded the bases with no outs. Rodriguez got one home with an RBI single before Trunzo cleared the bases. The sophomore shot a triple deep to left, scoring on the throw to cement a 10-0 margin for the run rule.

Callow experienced little difficulty in extinguishing the Inferno to finalize the victory. The sophomore finished with a fantastic statline: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, and most impressive of all, 10 strikeouts.

"I was just looking to come back from yesterday. That was not a game that was up to my standards personally, so I wanted to attack it a bit differently and perform to the ability I know I can," said Callow.

A total of seven Blue Streaks got basehits today, led by strong days by Kaylyn Odelli (3-for-4, 1 RBI), Elaina Rodriguez (3-for-3, 1 RBI), and Kendall Trunzo (2-for-2, 5 RBI).

The season is still young, but the Blue Streaks are showing plenty of pop at the plate and excellence in the circles, as the stats show. For the day, the Blue & Gold outhit their foes, 21-2, without a single error in the field.

"Last year was great because we had a great team culture, but this year has been even better. Everyone is very supportive of one another," said Callow. "We've come to Florida with a championship mentality. We're ready to go and perform at the highest standard we can."
