Baseball Loses Both Games On Walk-Offs In Ada

ADA, Ohio – The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

The latter was never more evident for the John Carroll baseball team against Ohio Northern, as the Blue Streaks lost both games to the Polar Bears on walk-off hits. They dropped Game 1, 6-5, after a throwing error scored the winning run in the ninth, and Game 2, 10-7, in the 13th inning off a three run homer.

Game 1

JCU jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning. Logan LaMere was plunked in the first at-bat of the inning. Sean Connolly immediately followed that up with a rifled ball down the left field line, leading to an RBI triple. Jack Harmon was next up and grounded out to first, scoring Connolly. An error and single put Blue Streaks on the corners, and Joe Olsavsky hit a sacifice fly to give JCU a 3-0 lead.

Matthew Aukerman, fresh off of pitching only the third no-hitter in JCU history just a week prior, struggled with his command. The Polar Bears capitalized on it in the home half of the third. A walk, balk, and pair of doubles from Logan Stevens and Jacob Wenning tied the game at three runs a piece after three.

Aukerman gave up his fourth walk with just one retired in the fourth inning and it ended his day. Henry Darrow came in to replace him and Ohio Northern kept things rolling. After recording a second out, it was back to back singles for the Polar Bears, with the second from Joey Kennedy driving in two runs and pushing ONU on top, 5-3.

The Blue Streaks wouldn't go down without a fight. LaMere was able to score in the fifth inning off an error to make it 5-4. From there, Henry Darrow kept JCU in the game and saved the bullpen with four shutout innings with two strikeouts and no walks.

John Carroll went on to tie the game at 5-5 in the eighth with a clutch Joe Olsavsky solo shot, his second of the year.

In the ninth, after forcing a shallow pop out to the right side, Darrow gave up a double to ONU's Robbie Reed, and Roger Simon was brought into the game to keep things even with a runner in scoring position. The right hander issued a walk to the first batter. The next batter would drop a swinging bunt between the mound and the third baseline. Trying his best to get an out on the tough play, Simon looked to fire to first base, but the throw sailed into right field, and ONU walked off with a 6-5 win.

Darrow, who pitched in a career-high five innings, got the loss while Bryce Holt and Connolly each had two hits for JCU.

Game 2

The Blue Streaks were adamant to start game two better than they finished game one. They would load the bases in the first with a walk, error, and hit batter. Back-to-back hit by pitches to Holt and Hanley brought a run home and pushed John Carroll in front, 1-0. The Blue Streaks looked to have extended the lead after an errant throw sailed into the outfield, but was called back for runner interference, and the rally stalled.

Ohio Northern was quick to respond. Back-to-back singles and a wild pitch brought the score even. Then, Corey McMann sent a ball flying over the right field wall, as ONU went on top, 3-1, in the first.

Reed would build on that lead with an RBI single in the second that drove in Sam Harrison to make it 4-1.

In the top of the third, an error and another hit by pitch put the first two batters on base for JCU. A few batters later and with two outs, Harmon reinvigorated his team with a double to right down the right field line that brought both men home and to bring the score within a run, 4-3.

The Polar Bears wasted no time responding in the home half of the frame when Chase Armstrong went yard with a runner on and two outs, which inflated the lead to 6-3.

A leadoff single from Michael Persichetti in the fourth was followed by two hit batsman to load the bases. Persichetti stood on third and a wild pitch allowed him to score to make it 6-4.

JCU wasn't quite finished though. Hanley hit a sacrifice fly, and with two outs, LaMere would hit an infield single that pushed the tying run in Mayle across the dish to tie it up at six apiece.

Jon Ambro would lock in for the rest of his start, as he finished his day with the six runs allowed on eight hits in six innings.

The game remained at 6-6 all the way through regulation. Each team was able to push a runner to second base in the ninth, but neither was able to get him any further.

Jamon Higley worked four scoreless innings in relief of Ambro, allowing two hits and a career high five strikeouts from the seventh inning to the tenth.

The offenses would begin spinning their tires again in the eleventh inning. After a Sean Connolly single with one out, JCU turned to Jack Beiter off the bench as a pinch hitter, and was able to get a ball into right field to score Connolly all the way from first. This gave John Carroll the lead for the first time since the first inning, ahead 7-6.

Garrett Siegel was brought into the game from the bullpen, but gave up a walk and two soft singles with no outs and the game was tied. With runners on first and second with no outs, the JCU defense responded with a fielders choice by Mayle, and two flyouts.

In the twelfth, JCU advanced a runner to third with two outs, but a flyout put an end to the threat. Siegel got the leadoff batter out with a strikeout, but an error, single passing a diving Persichetti, and an intentional walk, the bases were loaded with one out. Siegel forced a first pitch pop out, then Sean Connolly made a sprinting catch in foul territory to get them out of the inning.

ONU was able to capture some momentum with an inning ending double play in the 13th. With Simon back on the hill for the Blue Streaks, he allowed the first two runners on and gave up a three run shot to the next batter Armstrong to cap off the walk-off.

Each team recorded 14 hits, and JCU was led by Mayle's three.

John Carroll will head back to University Heights and face Oberlin in a non-conference game tomorrow on Sunday, April 16 with a 12:00 pm first pitch.
