Blue Streaks Rebound and Top Oberlin

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Following back-to-back losses to Ohio Northern on Saturday, the John Carroll baseball team was able to rebound against the Oberlin Yeomen in dominating fashion as they took home the non-conference win, 15-5, at Schweickert Field.

The scoring started in the first inning as Oberlin's Ethan Hurwitz doubled to left field for an RBI single, allowing Jacob Thomps to score. The Yeomen would add one to their lead following a Jake Blozy single to right field to bring the score to 2-0.

As for the Blue Streaks, a five-run offensive surge in the third inning made up for the lackluster start. Reigning OAC Hitter of the Week Joe Olsavsky got the momentum going with an RBI single. Moments later, a Connor Mayle single tied the game up at 2-2. With bases loaded and no outs, the Blue Streaks threatened to blow the game wide open. Fifth year graduate student Justin Hanley did just that, as he doubled to left center field bringing in three more runs to bring the score to 5-2 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Oberlin got one back in the fourth inning as Max Cairo was able to capitalize off of a wild pitch from John Carroll starting pitcher Alex Wu to cut their deficit to two.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, Cairo struck again as his ground out to shortstop was just enough for Hurwitz to reach home.

Yet again, John Carroll found themselves threatening with bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning and no outs. An RBI single from Olsavsky brought Jack Harmon in for the score to bring the score to 6-4. Fortunately for Oberlin, pitcher Andrew Shen dug deep and secured three straight outs via a fly out and two strikeouts to keep the game within reach.

Oberlin was held in check for the seventh inning, allowing the Blue Streaks to deliver their final blow. Sean Connolly scored via an Erik Daugenti single. Moments later, Daugenti scored courtesy of an error by the Otterbein shortstop. Soon after, for the third time, the Blue Streaks found themselves with bases loaded. Mayle capitalized with a single to right field to bring in another run. Bryce Holt would then earn a walk to tack on another run. To close out the scoring barrage, a sacrifice fly from Hanley allowed Olsavsky to score to bring the score to 11-4.

Following a run scored from Otterbein in the eighth, John Carroll continued to pour it on. Following an RBI single from Michael Persichetti, Mayle continued his phenomenal outing with a three-run homer to left field for the game's final runs.

Olsavsky, Mayle, and Michael Persichetti each recorded three hits for the Blue Streaks, while Mayle had five RBIs. Hanley moved into third all-time in JCU history with 134 career RBIs as he had four on the afternoon. Austin Miller earned his first career victory after pitching in three innings of relief after Wu went the first four.

John Carroll will be back in action Wednesday, April 19th for a doubleheader against Mount Union. The first game is set to start at 1:00 pm.
