Softball Swept Despite Comeback Efforts at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Minus a pair of tough innings, John Carroll Softball played well against Marietta College on Friday.

Unfortunately, a 4-run frame in both the first and second games doomed the Blue Streaks to a road sweep to the Pioneers. JCU showed no quit and almost mounted late comebacks in both games, but fell short.

The Blue Streaks lost 5-3 and 6-2, dropping to 14-14 overall and 4-10 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers ascend to 10-4 in conference play.

Game 1
Marietta fired out to a hot start in the second inning, aided by a couple errors. The Pioneers strung together four singles plus a 2-run double to roar for four runs in the second frame. Marietta's early 4-0 advantage looked insurmountable for much of the game, with the Pios' pitchers cruising.

Rachel Kazmirski got the start for the Pioneers in the circle and held the Blue Streaks hitless in the opening three innings, garnering all 9 outs via groundouts. Meanwhile, Danielle Orendi started to find a groove of her own, keeping the deficit at four runs until allowing a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Elaina Rodriguez broke up the no-hitter in the sixth frame, getting a hit off Amelia Timko, though nothing came of the bunt single.

In the top of the seventh, Marietta went to the bullpen, which almost cost them the ballgame. Alyssia Carmichael got a leadoff single, advancing to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a Kaylyn Odelli single. Melissa Smith scored Carmichael on an RBI single. Nina Scavelli kept it going with an infield single, advancing to second on a passed ball, and then to third on a Serena Paterno single. Scavelli then scored on a Lexie Genovese single.

And so, with two outs, Rodriguez stepped to the dish as the potential tying run. A throwing error by Marietta allowed Rodriguez to reach base and for Paterno to score. In dangerous waters, Marietta called upon Kazmirski to re-enter. Kendall Trunzo drew a walk to load the bases, but Kazmirski bore down and got the final out via a strikeout.

While the Blue Streaks stranded three runners, it was a valiant effort to get to that point with a chance to tie the game after entering the inning down by five.

Game 2
Marietta again notched a critical 4-run inning in the second game.

In the third frame, the Pioneers loaded the bases with 1 out. And who stepped up to the plate but Kazmirski, who drilled a grand slam for a 4-0 lead.

JCU's offense did not quit. In the fourth, Carmichael and Odelli each singled, but Marietta garnered a double play to end the threat. Meanwhile, Kazmirski homered again in the fifth to add to the lead, 5-0.

The Blue Streaks slimmed the deficit in the fifth. Bella Carcioppolo opened the frame with a single and got to second on a sacrifice bunt. She soon scored on a stolen base while Kaylyn Odelli stole second (after Odelli reached on an error). Odelli then crossed home on a wild pitch, leading to a pitching change. The bullpen quieted the threat.

In response, Marietta hit an RBI double for an insurance run, and retired the Blue Streaks in order for the 6-2 victory.

Brianna Callow was charged for the loss in the circle. JCU finished with just 4 hits as a team.

The Blue Streaks will have the weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday. John Carroll will head to Oberlin College for a non-conference doubleheader.
