Baseball Splits In Wilmington Highlighted By Comeback in First Game and Hanley's Career Home Run Record

WILMINGTON, Ohio – As the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament draws near and the playoff race begins to tighten, the John Carroll Blue Streak baseball team took a split against the Wilmington Quakers on the road.

JCU scored three runs in the ninth inning of the first game to lead them to a comeback, 7-6 victory, but fell in the second game 7-5 despite scoring the game's final four runs.

During game two, Justin Hanley broke Jim Wideikis' career record at John Carroll for home runs in a career with his blast in the fourth inning.

Game One

Both starting pitchers started their days with a scoreless three innings, but John Carroll would be the first to jump on the board.

In the fourth inning, the Blue and Gold would string three straight hits together from Justin Hanley, Sean Connolly and Jack Harmon before they recorded an out.

Then, Erik Daugenti pushed a fly ball into right field, allowing the first run the Blue Streaks to capture the lead by way of a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, with runners on the corners, the Blue Streaks wouldn't be able to muster anything else, but captured a 1-0 lead.

The Quakers would answer back in the home half of the inning. A lead off-double and pass ball put Jared Lammert on third base. A sacrifice fly to center field from Dominic Depa recorded the second out of the inning, but also had the game knotted at a run apiece.

Blue Streak starter Matthew Aukerman's day was coming to a close with the game still even. However, the John Carroll offense would give their ace one last hoo-rah before he gave up the ball.

In the seventh inning, Bryce Holt drove in Connor Mayle with an RBI double into left-center field to reclaim the lead. With no outs and a runner on second base, JCU wasn't finished. Hanley kept things rolling with a single to plate Holt. Following a Hanley steal, two fly outs seemed to kill the momentum for the Blue Streaks. However, an error from Wilmington third baseman, Jesse Reliford, allowed Hanley to cross home and extend the John Carroll lead to 4-1.

Aukerman would lock things down on the mound for a final inning, and finished by allowing just one run on four hits and was also able to sit down five Quakers on strikes.

The bullpen was unable to pick up where their starter left off. The Quakers offense came poised to hang a late-game crooked number in the eighth. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Jamon Higley was able to set down the next batter with a strikeout, but Lammert would drill a ball through the left side of the infield and bring in two runs for Wilmington.

With two runners still on, the Blue Streaks called on Maxwell Schumaker. The senior was able to force a fly out, but Depa was able to double down the left field line and drive in the tying run. Schumaker was able to force a ground ball that looked to end the inning, but a defensive error stopped that from occurring and instead pushed the Quakers ahead by two, 6-4.

John Carroll, in a series where a sweep was almost necessary for OAC tournament hopes, did not want to roll over.

Holt began the inning and sparked life into the Blue Streak bats when he muscled his sixth homer of the year over the right field wall to bring his team within one. Hanley would come out worse for wear in the next at-bat after he was plunked, but he was quickly moved to second on a Connolly single. Harmon executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both his runners into scoring position, and sacrifice the first out of the inning at first base.

Daugenti was issued first to set up a potential double play opportunity to end the game. Logan LaMere would put the ball on the ground, and the first out was recorded at second. LaMere would safely reach first and Evan Eilerman would commit an error that allowed two John Carroll runners to cross the plate. The game was, once again flipped on its head, and JCU led 7-6.

Garrett Siegel would be asked to shut the door in the ninth, and he was able to punch out two batters on his way to the save.

Game Two

Mayle started an action-packed first inning with an RBI single to plate Connolly and take a 1-0 lead.

Then, it was Wilmington's turn as Caleb Scott and Carter Scheben each hit two RBI singles to take a 4-1 advantage. Evan Kelsey would reach on a fielder's choice to score Depa to make it 5-1 and end the scoring in the first.

Wilmington pushed their lead to 7-1 in the third, with RBI doubles from Scheben and Kelsey.

Blue Streak starter Jon Ambro exited after just 2.2 innings pitched, giving up six hits, all seven runs, and walking five.

John Carroll would begin to chip away at the Quaker lead starting with Hanley's record-breaking solo shot to left center in the fourth.

Then, in the seventh, Olsavsky hit a two-RBI double to centerfield to make it 7-4. Unfortunately, another Hanley home run in the eighth was not enough to spark the Blue Streak offense as their scoring run dried up.

Wilmington starter Aaron Boster had a career game, as he went eight innings and struck out 19 Blue Streak batters. Henry Darrow pitched the final 5.1 innings for the Blue Streaks after Ambro's exit and gave up only three hits.

JCU will celebrate Senior Day in their final home regular season game against Wooster at 1:00 pm on Sunday, April 30.
