Women's Tennis Stumbles in Singles in Home Opening Loss to Ohio Northern

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Doubles play hinted at a great day for John Carroll Women's Tennis, but Ohio Northern ended that notion in singles play.

The Blue Streaks excelled early but faltered against the Polar Bears in a 6-3 defeat.

With the defeat, the Blue Streaks drop to 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and 3-9 overall.

John Carroll got out to a hot start by taking two of three doubles matches.

While Ohio Northern opened with an 8-4 win at #2 doubles over Kaylyn Gimbel and Caroline Chandler, the Blue Streaks roared back with a pair of wins. First, Peyton Crumpler fired up an 8-6 conquest at #3 doubles. The JCU tandem stood deadlocked with the ONU duo before roaring late to secure the 8-6 win.

Mia Zivkovic and Felicity Kolb secured the W at #1 doubles in excellent fashion, firing up an 8-5 win. The duo stands with a flawless 4-0 mark together during conference play.

Ohio Northern tied the contest at two apiece by drawing first blood in singles play. ONU tabbed a 6-0, 6-1 win at #5 singles to knot the contest, and then snagged the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 conquest at #6 singles.

And then, the Polar Bears delivered the killshots with wins at #4 (6-1, 6-1) and #3 (6-3, 6-2) to secure the win. Ohio Northern also tallied a victory at #2, 6-4, 6-3, leaving #1 singles as the last to be decided.

Zivkovic cruised through the opening set, 6-0, but her foe found her stride in the second set. Lengthy rallies of over a minute were prevalent, as the teams watched a thrilling chess match. The Broadview Heights native eventually outlasted her opponent, 7-5.

John Carroll will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 at Marietta.
