Women's Lacrosse Loses Offensive Slugfest to Capital at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Friday's battle of women's lacrosse Ohio Athletic Conference powerhouses lived up to the billing.

John Carroll and Capital traded blows like heavyweights in a contest filled with offense.

But in the end, the defending conference champions enjoyed the upper hand, firing a few late goals to seal the deal. The Comets walked away from Don Shula Stadium with a 19-15 win.

The Comets struck first, scoring twice in the early going to sneak ahead, 2-0. But the John Carroll defense constricted after early jitters, as Josephine Lawler made a couple key saves, including one on a Capital free-position attempt.

The Blue Streaks got on the board twice during the four-minute mark to quickly tie the game, courtesy of unassisted goals by Kendall Gessner and Shannon Burdick. A couple minutes later, Burdick struck again on a marvelous bouncer on the free-position. Capital called timeout with 2:54 left in the first and JCU up 3-2.

After the strategy session, Capital responded with three free-position goals to poke ahead, 5-3, entering the second quarter. The Comets kept up the pressure and got the first tally of the quarter, but the Blue Streaks did not wilt. Two free-position goals by Anna Spitzer (the second following a Capital yellow card) slimmed the deficit to one.

And Lauren Schwartz provided a timely goal midway through the quarter, finding twine for the first time this season to tie the game at 6-6 with 7:53 to play. And just 27 seconds later, Gessner broke out ankle-breaking moves to score a go-ahead goal and JCU's first lead. Mary Doherty soon slotted home another picture-perfect goal off a Spitzer assist before Capital concluded the run at 5 five goals.

The Comets tied the game at eight apiece at the 4:31 mark and retook the lead a minute later, as the game continued its seesaw journey. The teams then traded goals, as a Burdick goal off a great Olivia Hanulak pass was soon answered by the Comets. So, Capital took a 10-9 lead into the break.

The game continued to tilt back and forth in the second half. Capital scored first but then the Blue Streaks responded with two by Burdick and Gessner. The Comets got ahead briefly before Gessner passed to Burdick, who knotted the game back up at 12. Capital scored two of three goals to end the quarter, with a Gessner marker from Spitzer being JCU's contribution. The Comets held a tenuous 14-13 lead entering the fourth.

In the opening part of the fourth quarter, the teams traded shots a goal apiece. Burdick did the honors yet again for John Carroll with a Hanulak assist. With 7:10 to play, Capital found the back of the net to take a 16-14 lead. And so, at a critical juncture of the game, JCU's coaching staff called a timeout.

Unfortunately, the Comets continued their strong play after the break. Grace Osborn scored back-to-back-to-back goals after having a relatively quiet game (for the conference's leading scorer's standard). And so, Capital put things away.

That didn't stop the Blue Streaks from showing lots of fight late. Lauren Schwartz charged towards the cage and fired one home with 33 seconds left, proving there was no quit in JCU.

Burdick topped the team in goals, as the Penfield, New York native tallied a career-high 6 goals. Kendall Gessner aided the offense heavily with 4 goals and 2 assists. Hanulak's 3 assists proved helpful, too.

Mary Doherty was a critical presence on the field for John Carroll, tabbing 10 draw controls, 5 caused turnovers, and 5 groundballs, all team bests. The Eastchester, New York native's efforts helped JCU far outdo Capital in draw controls, 26-12.

Clears proved to be a key stat. While Capital was a near perfect 22-of-23, John Carroll missed a few, going 22-for-28. JCU also committed 19 turnovers to Capital's 13.

The freshmen goalies were peppered with shots today, as Capital registered 32 shots on goal while JCU notched 29. Lawler accrued a season-high 13 saves.

After Easter, the Blue Streaks will be back in action on the road at Otterbein on Wednesday at 4 pm.
