Guided by Freshmen, Volleyball Fires Back to Beat SUNY Brockport in Season Opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio – A slow start did not doom John Carroll Volleyball in the first contest of the 2023 campaign.

The Blue Streaks fell behind by two sets, but fired back to win the next three sets and open the season with a win in the first contest of the Mount Union Tournament, thanks in part to some spectacular freshmen efforts.

JCU bested SUNY Brockport by set scores of 15-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 15-8.

The Golden Eagles revved up the offense from the get-go. While JCU edged out to an 8-5 advantage, Brockport used a 7-0 run to gallivant to a 12-8 lead. The set remained closely contested until a 5-0 Brockport run soared their lead to 20-12. The Golden Eagles kept the foot on the gas with strong kills down the stretch for a 25-15 set one victory.

Freshmen Hailey Williams and Natalie Glowe helped to lead JCU early in the second set with kills, but a 5-0 Brockport jaunt suddenly shot up to a 16-8 lead. The Blue Streaks roared for a 6-point run to slim the margin to 16-14. But try as the Blue Streaks might, Brockport put it away down the stretch with a 25-19 win.

The third set saw John Carroll find a groove on offense, with a fantastic .480 attack percentage after scuffling in the first couple sets. Attack errors aided JCU in the early goings, but it was also great to see youngsters like Mary Kate Sheehan earn kills. Back-to-back kills by Williams and Glowe pushed JCU ahead 16-10, and the lead never evaporated. JCU fired up 5 straight to seal the set, with Williams authoring the final kill.

While Brockport snuck ahead early in the fourth set with a 10-7 lead, the Blue Streaks really came alive. Two kills apiece by Jessica Liddle and Sheehan plus a Williams ace created a 7-point run for a 14-10 lead. And the momentum continued down the stretch as JCU's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, powering a 25-14 set win.

In the tiebreaking set, the Blue Streaks kept on rolling. After firing up an 8-4 advantage, the Blue Streaks' youngsters continued to apply the pressure. Sheehan and Glowe helped to finish the victory with a 15-8 conquest in the final set.

For the match, the story was the freshmen. Mary Kate Sheehan topped the team with 13 kills, followed by 8 kills for Natalie Glowe. Jessica Liddle, Kendra Dziubinski, and Hailey Williams all tallied 7 kills. JCU finished with a .302 attack percentage as a team.

Maddie Maziarz was on her game with 23 assists, with Haley Nicholson chipping in 17. Transfer Ellie Schenk led the way with 12 digs, followed by 8 digs apiece for Lexi MacDonald and Williams.

The Blue Streaks have a busy day ahead tomorrow on day two of the Mount Union Tournament. JCU opens against Ohio Wesleyan at 2 pm and then finishes against Albion at 4 pm.
