Volleyball Extends Win Streak to Eight, Defeating Hiram and Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Blue Streaks are hot. Red hot.

John Carroll Volleyball is on an absolute tear, as the Blue Streaks have now won eight straight following a two-win Saturday in Pennsylvania at the Allegheny Tournament.

The Blue Streaks swept the Hiram College Terriers, 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-19) and defeated the host Allegheny Gators, 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18).

Jennifer Follmer earned All-Tournament honors, leading the way with 21 kills across the two matches.

JCU vs. Hiram
The very beginning of the opening set was even at 2-2. And then a kill by Jennifer Follmer got the ball in the hands of Natalie Glowe. The freshman quickly caught fire, with an amazing five service aces, including three in a row. Glowe's excellent serving skills set the tone for a dominant opening set, as the Blue Streaks roared out to a 12-2 lead. Mary Kate Sheehan kept up the pressure with nice kills, while Morgan Wieczenski, Deja Whitten, and Marissa Lynch all provided kills down the stretch to finish it out, 25-12.

The Terriers put up a much more effective battle in the second set, as neither team could grasp a significant lead early. But then three straight JCU kills by Jillian Kellick, Hailey Williams, and Steph Conley pushed JCU ahead, 15-12. The Blue Streaks stayed ahead until later in the set, when Hiram knotted the game at 21-all. But Hiram errors and kills by Glowe and Kellick did the trick to put it away, 25-23.

Ellie Schenk took center stage in set three, helping to power a 5-point run that fired JCU ahead, 12-6. Her two service aces helped the cause, as did Glowe kills. Stephanie Laraway, Conley, and Follmer all got in on the fun, as JCU sealed the deal in the third set, 25-19.

No one hit double-digit kills, but it didn't matter, as a host of Blue Streaks contributed to a strong .287 hitting percentage. Sheehan topped the team with nine. Maddie Maziarz set up the success with 20 kills, while Haley Nicholson provided 13. Ellie Schenk and Maziarz tied for the team lead with 9 digs, while Hailey Williams earned seven.

JCU vs. Allegheny
The host Gators looked to be in strong position to set the stage for an opening set win. Allegheny enjoyed several nice runs early in the opening set, but each time, the Blue Streaks countered. Allegheny still managed to sneak ahead late, 21-20, but then Liddle and Follmer tabbed kills to soar JCU in front, 23-21. An Allegheny error and a Liddle ace supplied the needed points for a narrow 25-23 opening win.

Momentum stuck with John Carroll in the second set. Allegheny errors helped, but kills by Sheehan, Follmer, and Liddle provided the firepower for an 18-9 JCU lead. Allegheny tried to make it interesting down the stretch with a 4-point run. But a Kendra Dziubinski kill and a Nicholson ace ensured a comeback did not occur.

The Gators prolonged things by winning the third set. The hosts galloped out of the gates to a 14-8 lead, but the Blue Streaks erased the gap on the back of a 6-point run powered by kills from Williams, Glowe, Follmer, and Lexi MacDonald. With the score tied at 16-16, the ball seesawed back and forth, with no more than a 2-point lead for either side. John Carroll enjoyed a 23-22 lead, but then Allegheny tabbed three straight points to steal the set.

The Blue Streaks sent Maziarz out to serve to start the fourth set. The veteran powered a dominant 5-0 start, with two Liddle kills also helping plenty. The lead kept growing to 10-2 and then to 17-7. Errors significantly harmed Allegheny's chances of a comeback, as did late Williams kills in a 25-18 clincher.

This match belonged to Jennifer Follmer, who led all players with 14 kills. Natalie Glowe followed with 11 kills, while Jessica Liddle also hit double figures with 10. Maddie Maziarz did her thing with 32 assists, while Haley Nicholson tallied 15 assists. Lexi MacDonald shined with 23 digs, with Hailey Williams (14) and Maziarz (11) also doing great work.

The road warriors will continue to play away from University Heights this week. A trip to Carnegie Mellon awaits John Carroll on Wednesday.
