Volleyball's Winning Streak Concludes at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- An 8-game winning streak for the John Carroll Volleyball team came to an end on Wednesday night, bringing their 2023 season record to 9-3 overall.

The Blue Streaks traveled to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night to face the Carnegie Mellon Tartans, losing in three sets: 10-25, 15-25, 17-25.

The beginning of the first set started off in a neck-and-neck match. Both teams took turns claiming points, yet the Tartans were quick to grab the lead when they could. Carnegie Mellon found their momentum early in the match and immediately brought themselves to a 7-14 lead. John Carroll fought to close the gap, but couldn't follow through when CMU rallied the last eight points to claim the first set win.

The Blue Streaks strived to turn their game around in the second set. Maddie Maziarz started off with an attack to gain the first point for the Streaks. JCU carried their drive and maintained the lead for the first five points. The Tartans were quick to regain their energy and brought the score 5-7 in their favor.

Jennifer Follmer and Natalie Glowe succeeded in tying up the score with back to back kills, bringing the match to a tight 8-8. Yet, JCU lost their power after Carnegie Mellon brought the match to a 16-10 lead. The Tartans remained calm and collected after causing a rally scene. The Blue Streaks had one last chance after Follmer marked another kill towards the end of the set, but it was too late as Carnegie Mellon secured their win with a 25-15 win.

It was once again an equal play on the court as both teams went back and forth claiming points, seeing a repeat from the first set. The Tartans then exploded on the court, as they charged a 6-point rally. Kendra Dzuibinski forced a kill for the Blue Streaks to manage the score at a closer 11-16. John Carroll called a timeout for an attempt to stop the Tartans's offensive charge. As Carnegie Mellon accompanied their lead in the third set, JCU kept up their intensity and brought themselves back into the match.

An impressive block from Steph Conley narrowed the JCU deficit to five. However, the compelling Carnegie Mellon attack repeatedly gained points and sealed the win, 25-17.

Follmer conducted the team offensive at the net, tallying five kills in the match, followed by Glowe and Mary Kate Sheehan notching three and two.

Mariarz led with seven assists and seven digs for the Streaks, with Haley Nicholson tabbing a total of four assists. Hailey Williams tied the total digs with seven and Lexi MacDonald earned six.

The Blue Streaks hit the road to Huntingdon, PA on Saturday, September 23 for two matches. First, the Blue Streaks will take on the reigning Division III National Champion and #1 ranked team in the nation, Juniata College at 12 pm. Afterwards, JCU will battle Muhlenberg College at 2:30 pm.
