Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale to #14 Otterbein

JCU stole a set but couldn't upset the Cardinals in Westerville

WESTERVILLE – In the regular season finale, John Carroll Volleyball got a good test for the postseason.

While the result did not go in the Blue Streaks' favor, John Carroll did show some positive signs heading into next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

John Carroll put up a fight on the road at #14 Otterbein University in a 3-1 loss at the Rike Center by set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 18-25.

Historically, Westerville has been a difficult place for the Blue Streaks. Otterbein has now won the last 10 meetings in central Ohio, and 16 of the last 20 dating back to 1999. A traditionally strong team, the Cardinals won the Ohio Athletic Conference with an 8-0 mark and sport a 24-3 record overall, carrying a top-25 ranking from the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association).

Despite all that, John Carroll got out to a modest 11-9 lead before Otterbein sliced into it with a 6-0 run. A couple Otterbein attack errors helped JCU reclaim a tight 17-16 lead, but an 8-0 Cardinal eruption put the set to bed.

A couple early Mary Kate Sheehan kills helped to set the stage for a nice second set for JCU. Hailey Williams and Natalie Glowe also contributed big kills to elevate JCU's lead to 14-7. Down the stretch, JCU did enough to hold off the Cardinals, as a pair of Otterbein service errors helped to halt momentum. Williams finished off the set for the Streaks.

Khloe Trivoli contributed some big kills early in the third set, as JCU battled to a 16-14 deficit. Kallan Hrics also helped keep the visitors in it at 21-18 with a couple nice kills, but the Cardinals iced it late despite three straight Glowe kills.

Otterbein opened with a 5-0 run, but JCU did not despair, fighting back to a 9-all tie. A Glowe kill set JCU ahead, 14-12, but then the Cardinals' killer instinct came out. The hosts roared for 9 straight points to put any visions of a fifth set (which went in JCU's favor last year in an upset home win) to bed.

Glowe topped the Blue Streaks with 13 kills. Tess Murray did her usual strong work with 31 assists. Olivia Mogyordy notched 21 digs.
