ZOAR, Ohio – How about these freshmen?

In college golf, fall is in part a preparation season for the postseason tournaments in the spring. For freshmen, adjusting to college life while playing competitive golf in the first weekend after classes start can be daunting.

Well, maybe that wasn't a topic covered by his Student Welcome And Transition (SWAT) Leader during Streak Week. And it definitely wasn't covered during Syllabus Week.

The freshman phenom guided John Carroll Men's Golf to a strong opening weekend at the Gatorade Collegiate at Zoar Village Golf Course (par 72), hosted by The College of Wooster. Hoyser finished as the medalist with a 2-day score of 143 (-1), winning via a tiebreaker.

The John Carroll "A" team notched a score of 591 for fourth place, while the John Carroll "B" team did even better, roaring for second place with a team score of 586.

Hoyser – hailing from Pittsford, New York – was the talk of the course on Sunday. The first-year did okay on Saturday with a mark of 75. But his incredible Sunday round of 68 (-4) caught plenty of eyes. His front nine score of 32 (-4) was what did the trick. Birdies on Holes 1, 2, 4, and 7 helped him immensely. A couple bogeys on 10 and 11 set him back, but then he rebounded with three welcomes birdies on holes 12, 14, and 15. Even play down the stretch ensured he'd be the best man playing golf on Sunday, as he hit par on the final three holes. Hoyser won the tournament tiebreaker, which was the low round of the day. Not a bad start to your college career!

Continuing with the "A" team, Jack Gerborg was the next lowest finisher for JCU. The sophomore from Avon opened with a 72 (E) before nabbing a 75 on the second day, totalling a 143. Austin Malley, a freshman, started strong with a 71 (-1) before hitting a 78, for a final of 149. Zach Brinks, the senior from St. Xavier, carded a 75 on Saturday before tabbing a 78 on Sunday. Finally, Anthony Nuzzo, a senior from Pittsburgh, recorded a 75-82-157 for JCU.

On the "B" team, Jacob Hazen nearly caught up to Hoyser. The senior from Dublin Coffman registered a 74 on Saturday and a 70 on Sunday, just one stroke off of his freshman teammate Hoyser.

Grant Lumley and Kamden Mowry tied for second overall on the team, which turned in the second-place effort. Lumley – a senior from Johnstown, Pennsylvania – stayed even keel all weekend with a 74-73-147. Mowry, a freshman, found a groove on Sunday with a 72 following a 75 on Saturday. Justy VonLehmden impressed on Saturday with a 71 before taking a step back on Sunday at 78, still finishing with an impressive 148 for the frosh. Finally, Wade Boyle accrued a 75-78-153 in his first JCU action.

John Carroll is back in action next Sunday at the Baldwin Wallace Fall Invitational at Pine Hills in Hinckley.
