Austin Malley Finishes Fall as NCAC Athlete of Week

| By:

Malley won medalist honors at Wittenberg last week

CLEVELAND – Just like John Carroll's other North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honoree, this Blue Streak is winning the award for the second time this season.

And for good reason, as the talented golfer put on a show this past week.

Austin Malley is the NCAC Men's Golfer of the Week.

Malley shined at the Jeff Roope Invitational on Monday, October 20 and Tuesday, October 21. Most especially, his work on October 21 wins him this award.

In the opening round at Springfield Country Club, not an easy challenge for a first-timer, the Peters Township grad did well with a one-under-par effort of 71 that included three birdies. But it was nothing compared to his second round effort.

With the Blue Streaks trailing host Wittenberg University by 10 strokes heading into the second day, Malley guided a furious rally. The Venetia, Pennsylvania native notched an unreal five birdies on the front nine, along with one more on No. 12. Malley did not have a bogey all day, an impressive feat in its own right.

When the dust settled, Malley stood with a fantastic five-under-par score of 67, just two strokes off the school record set by JCU Hall of Famer Blake Furgerson.

Thanks to Malley's efforts, JCU tied for first, a great feat despite JCU losing a two-man, sudden death aggregate playoff on the first hole.

For the event, Malley registered a 138, four strokes better than the second-placer from Wittenberg. Not a bad way to finish out the fall for Malley and the Blue Streaks.
