FIVE SET THRILLER: Volleyball Outlasts Yellow Jackets in Home Rivalry Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The John Carroll Volleyball team secured a monumental win against Baldwin Wallace tonight at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The matchup went into 5 sets in a back-and-forth thriller, with John Carroll coming out on top, 3-2.

And for the first time since 2016, the Blue Streaks are off to a 3-1 start in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

"We saw how good and scrappy we were playing as a team after the first set," said Williams. "And after we had a downfall in the 2nd and 3rd set, we were able to use that as a fire under us to get us going, knowing that we can win this."

A strong rally started John Carroll's first set against Baldwin Wallace, winning the first point. After the Yellow Jackets took the next 4 points, John Carroll made an easy comeback, taking the lead 7-5. The play was very intense and quick, each team making essential digs as well as key hits. The score was kept very tight, but eventually the Blue Streaks broke the tie and took a strong lead 13-8. Abby Bednar had a fantastic kill to make the gap even bigger between the teams, 15-9. Although both teams were playing very well, John Carroll capitalized on opportunities. The Blue Streaks caught fire to take a big lead, 19-12, with a kill by Kendra Dziubinski. The Blue Streaks only allow two more points from the Yellow Jackets when they secure the next 6 points to close out the set. With a key hit by Hailey Williams to end the set, 25-15.

In the second set, it was Baldwin Wallace who took the first lead with two kills in a row. The Yellow Jackets keep the steady lead with mistakes from John Carroll, 10-7. Bednar had a great kill to close in on the gap to one. The Yellow Jackets had a 3-point streak, but it was broken by a Williams kill. John Carroll struggled at times, but Dziubinski and Natalie Glowe showcased strong defense gain some points for the Streaks. There were many intense battles for each point, but Baldwin Wallace kept the lead while John Carroll continuously tried to catch up. The Blue Streaks were determined to win the second set, and started making great plays to close in on the gap to 21-19. But the Yellow Jackets finished strong, 25-21.

Unlike the first two sets, both teams took turns getting the first few points to start the third. The Blue Streaks and the Yellow Jackets matched each other's high intensity, making it hard to sustain a solid lead. Dziubinski had a great block to take the lead 7-6, but not for long, as Baldwin Wallace got the next point to tie it. For the next 10 points John Carroll would a one point lead, then Baldwin Wallace responded with another point. Essential plays from Dziubinski, Mary Kate Sheehan, and Williams allowed John Carroll to stay in the game. But down the stretch, BW pulled away, emerging with a 25-18 victory.

Similar to the third set, John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace went back and forth between the first couple of points. Williams had two great kills to take the lead, 8-7. The Yellow Jackets tied up the score, 11-11, with a John Carroll error. Sheehan tallied a key hit to grab the lead once again, followed by another kill from Glowe. John Carroll fought to stay in the lead with a block by Bednar and Jessica Liddle, and then a kill by Bednar with a great set from Tess Humphrey. John Carroll extended their gap with a service ace and a few kills, making the score, 22-16. John Carroll secured the win with strong play late, 25-18, forcing a fifth set.

Headed into the deciding set, John Carroll opened with more momentum and opened up a 5-2 lead, with one kill by Sheehan and then one by Liddle. A massive kill by Glowe gave John Carroll a big lead 6-3 accompanied by a block from the Bednar and Liddle pair. Baldwin Wallace inched closer to John Carroll's lead, but the Streaks were able to keep them away and close out the contest, 15-8.

Williams had a fantastic game leading her team with 17 kills, not making a single error. Olivia Mogyordy also proved to be a key player contributing to the win with 25 digs. Bednar and Glowe both excelled with 14 kills. JCU's front row stood strong with 20 blocks, and recorded a .240 attack percentage.
