Men's Soccer Accelerates Past Pios in Homecoming Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a defensive affair, John Carroll Men's Soccer took advantage of its golden opportunity.

The Blue Streaks emerged with a 1-0 conquest to close out Homecoming Weekend at John Carroll.

A Logan Penton penalty kick goal provided the margin of victory for John Carroll. The win extends JCU's unbeaten streak vs. Marietta to 18 matches.

It was a quiet first half, with little to speak of in terms of action. John Carroll and Marietta battled to a scoreless draw.

The Pioneers opted for a very defensive style of play, sitting back for most of the first half with defenders set to thwart any potential chances.

That didn't stop John Carroll from trying to crack the code. Dylan Halm forced the keeper to make a save in the 19th minute and Logan Penton fired a shot wide shortly after. Nicholas Graeca and Halm each tested the waters near the two-thirds mark of the period.

But for the most part, there is not quite much to talk about from the first 45 minutes.

Marietta's first truly promising chance occurred in the 58th minute (though the Pios did have some lesser chances before this) with a pass that headed off a Pio to a waiting Brendan Moher.

At long last, John Carroll's efforts paid off in the 68th minutes. The Blue Streaks pressed the advantage on an opportunity, and Marietta's goalkeeper came out of the box and tripped up Logan Penton. The Vermillion native stepped up with the resulting penalty kick and golden opportunity to break the ice.

Penton did not miss out, burying it with authority for a 1-0 advantage.

Immediately afterwards, Marietta counterattacked. It resulted in a scary chance that bonked off the post, but thankfully not into harm's way.

A flurry of activity followed in the 76th minute for John Carroll with a couple of close-in Penton shots. But Marietta stood up to the JCU onslaught. The process repeated itself in the 79th minute, but this time Graeca tried to find the insurance marker. But no more offense materialized.

Brendan Moher kept the clean sheet in another good effort by the St. Edward grad.
