Women's Swimming & Diving Beats Mount Union and ONU in Two OAC Wins

It was quite the weekend for John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving.

On Friday, John Carroll defeated Mount Union in Alliance, and then triumphed Ohio Northern in Saturday's home debut at Johnson Natatorium. Here's our weekend recap. 

John Carroll: 167, Mount Union: 75

ALLIANCE, Ohio –
On Friday, the John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving squad shipped down to Alliance for a highly anticipated Friday night bout with rival Mount Union. 

With starting out the Ohio Athletic Conference schedule strong with a victory against one of the conference's best on the mind, the JCU women delivered with a statement 167-75 win over the Purple Raiders. 


Results 

The first event of the evening set the tone for the women's competition. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Blue Streaks secured first place with a time of 1:52.81. Audrey Sevald, Regan Gunzy, Grace Roberts, and Mairin Dalziel combined their talents to achieve this victory.

Next up was the 1000 Freestyle, where the Blue Streaks showcased their youthful talent. First year Ella Muzychak won her first OAC race with a time of 11:13.50, while fellow rookie Gabby Melin placed third with a time of 11:51.87.

In the 50 Free, two more underclassmen delivered strong performances. First year Bree Shirkey won the event with a time of 25.98 seconds, and first year Taylor Hudson finished third with a time of 26.76 seconds.

The 200 IM featured a Blue Streak duo taking first and second place. First year JJ Gowetski achieved first with a time of 2:17.82, followed closely by junior Olivia Goodman in second at 2:22.90.

The standout performance of the evening came in the 200 Butterfly, where John Carroll swept the podium. First year Gabby Adamczyk dazzled to earn her first career OAC victory with a winning time of 2:16.66. Sophomores Grace Roberts and Marina Sneyd finished just behind her, securing second and third places.

Audrey Sevald capped off an impressive night with her second win in the 200 Backstroke, achieving victory with a time of 2:11.78. Junior Lauren Koppelman also shone in this heat, taking second place with a time of 2:17.66.

Sevald was not the only freshman to achieve two first-place finishes that evening. Ella Muzychak also excelled by winning the 500 Free by a significant margin of eight seconds, finishing with a time of 5:29.77.

In the following event, it was the upperclassmen's turn to shine in the 200 Backstroke. Goodman finished first with a time of 2:36.63, while senior Regan Gunzy closely followed in second place.

In the final event of the evening, John Carroll concluded a commanding performance by winning the 200 Free Relay. The team of Bree Shirkey, Kaitlyn Hilty, Grace Roberts, and Mairin Dalziel combined their efforts to secure victory and put an exclamation mark on their successful evening in Alliance.

Success in 1-meter diving played a significant role in setting up John Carroll's OAC win on Friday night. Senior Anne Meunier earned first place in this event with a total of 220.45 points, while Emily Gelske contributed an impressive effort by finishing third with 157.10 points.

John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving dominated in a dual against OAC foe Ohio Northern, winning 173-75. Fans and athletes alike showed out to support Breast Cancer Awareness this Saturday afternoon.

Results

The afternoon started with a clean sweep in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The Blue Streak team of Audrey Sevald, Regan Gunzy, Grace Roberts, and Mairin Dalziel took the win with a time of 1:54.93. This was closely followed by another JCU squad featuring Lauren Koppelmann, Olivia Goodman, Gabrielle Adamczyk, and Bree Shirkey (1:55.49).

The 1000 Free saw a dominating performance from Ella Muzychak, swimming a time of 10:42.66. In second was fellow Blue Streak Gabriella Melin with a time of 11:52.26. 

The 200 Free was dominated by the Blue Streaks. Led by junior Mairin Dalziel (1:57.82), first years Jenna Fetsko (2:08.72) and Sophia Noecker (2:09.34) helped sweep the top 3 places. 

The 100 Backstroke again saw three Blue Streaks in the top 3. Freshman Audrey Sevald took home first place with a time of 1:02.00. First year Taylor Hudson (1:04.27) and junior Lauren Koppelmann (1:05.27) rounded out the scoring bunch.

In the 100 Breaststroke, senior Regan Gunzy took second with a time of 1:12.81. Following closely was junior Kaitlyn Hilty, swimming a mark of 1:13.56. The 200 Fly saw rookie Gabby Adamczyk (2:14.66), sophomore Marina Sneyd (2:21.84), and sophomore Grace Roberts (2:22.45) yet again earn the Streaks a sweep in the top 3.

The 50 Free featured Mairin Dalziel's second individual win of the day with a time of 24.57. In second place was first year Bree Shirkey with a mark of 26.28.

Senior Annie Meunier twisted and turned to the high mark of the day in the 3-meter dive, scoring a 213.98. In third was senior Emily Gelske with a score of 154.35.

In her third event of the day, Bree Shirkey earned an individual win in the 100 Free with a time of 57.59. In second place was Jenna Fetsko with a split of 58.94. Transitioning to the 200 Backstroke, Audrey Sevald took home her third win of the day, swimming a time of 2:13.76. Not too far behind in third, Lauren Koppelmann (2:19.74) swam another great race.

Finishing second in the 200 Breaststroke was Regan Gunzy with a mark of 2:39.52. In third was Kaitlyn Hilty (2:42.80). Similair to her dominant performance in the 1000 Free, Ella Muzychak cruised to a win in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:30.54. Taking second was Gabby Melin (5:44.94), and in third was Marina Sneyd (5:48.51).

The 100 Fly saw Gabby Adamczyk get her second individual win of the day with a mark of 1:02.09. In third was Grace Roberts with a time of 1:03.47.

Annie Meunier doubled back in the 1-meter dive, winning with a mark of 232.50. In third place, sophomore Haley Boyle scored a 158.70. Out of the diving break in the 200 IM, Olivia Goodman won with a time of 2:20.18.

Finishing the afternoon up, the 400 Free Relay saw the team of Bree Shirkey, Grace Roberts, Jenna Fetsko, and Mairin Dalziel take the win with a time of 3:47.55. This great swim was quickly followed by the team of Gabby Adamczyk, Sophia Noecker, Kaitlyn Hilty, and Gabby Melin (3:54.62).

Assistant Coach Maddie Dolce said this about the women's dominant performance: "Everybody came together as a team today. Coming off a win Friday night against Mount Union, I think everyone was really determined today." 

Dolce had high praise for  Mairin Dalziel and also noted Olivia Goodman's great performance in the IM. "There were solid swims all around. Everyone is looking strong and doing what they need to do."

John Carroll will travel across state lines to Danville, Kentucky for the Centre Quad Meets against Centre, DePauw and Lynchburg. The meet is set to take place on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2.
