Blue Streaks Secure First Road Win, Beating the Fighting Muskies

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – In the team's first road win of the season, John Carroll Football put in a workmanlike effort at Muskingum University.

The Blue Streaks won the battle at the line of scrimmage and conquered the Fighting Muskies at the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex, 35-10.

With the victory, John Carroll evens out to 2-2 on the season, and 2-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

On offense, JCU relied on the efficiency of Nick Semptimphelter and the reliable multi-headed run game. On defense, the Men of Carroll prevented Muskingum from getting any semblance of a run game established and hit the quarterbacks often to prevent the passing game from putting points on the board.

Muskingum picked up one first down on the opening drive, but that would be it. John Carroll's first drive did not go for naught, as the Blue Streaks methodically drove down the field. The visitors completed an impressive 12-play, 81-yard drive with a 2-yard Quincy Newsom touchdown.

The Fighting Muskies again picked up a lone first down on the next drive before having to punt. John Carroll experienced no such struggles on offense, marching down the field for another scoring drive. Connor Cohan slipped open on the left side for a touchdown reception on a well-designed play to conclude the drive.

The success soon vanished for the Blue Streaks' offense, as the next three drives ended in a fumble, punt, and the end of the half, respectively. Meanwhile, Muskingum managed to get on the board with a 38-yard field goal. And so, the Blue & Gold held a 14-3 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the JCU offense awakened with alacrity. Quickly getting into enemy territory, Nick Semptimphelter lofted a gorgeous 32-yard bomb to Tyren Montgomery running a flag route to the left corner of the end zone just 2:17 into the quarter.

Just about six minutes later, history repeated itself. Montgomery hauled in a 32-yard touchdown reception again, catching a Semptimphelter playaction pass at the 14-yard line near the sideline and then dodging a tackle at the 12 before dashing to paydirt.

The Blue Streaks were not done quite yet on offense. Quincy Newsom provided JCU's final points of the day on a 26-yard touchdown scamper, as the sophomore dodged and spun past defenders for his first rushing touchdown of the season. A pulling Nathan Kovach made a couple key blocks and tight end Connor Cohan helped to seal the edge, amongst others who blocked well on the play.

Muskingum managed its lone touchdown late in the game for the final score of 35-10.

Nick Semptimphelter finished an excellent 15-of-18 passing with 217 yards and three scores. Tyren Montgomery was his primary target, catching 5 passes for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Seven Streaks tallied receptions today. The running backs continued to share work, with Evan McVay leading all rushers with 13 carries for 87 yards, though Newsom got both TDs. The offensive line deserves credit, not allowing any sacks today.

On defense, Ben Day was an absolute monster, wreaking havoc at every turn. The Brecksville native topped the team with 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 pass breakups. Joe Thimons was an agent of chaos, too, with 3 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 tackles for loss. Plenty of played contributed, as nine different Blue Streaks produced 4 tackles. John Carroll limited the Muskies to 17 yards on 23 attempts, just 0.6 yards per carry.
