Men's Basketball Victorious Against Penn State Harrisburg To Sweep Tip-Off Classic

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- On the second day of the Penn State Harrisburg Tip-off Classic, the John Carroll Blue Streaks were set to face off against the hosting Lions. In a game where the Blue Streaks came out much faster than the night before, the Blue and Gold are heading home with a 68-49 victory and a 2-0 record.

The scoring started early as Chase Toppin knocked down a three on the Blue Streaks first possession. The Lions responded with one of their own to tie it early. A pair of Henry Raynor free throws and a Luke Chicone three were quickly answered by a Penn State layup and three to prevent either team from gaining true momentum. Layups by Toppin and Will Yontek as well as 3-pointers from Aidan Fitzgerald and Luke Chicone would open the lead to eight for the Blue Streaks. From there, a 5-0 run by Luke Frazier would get the lead to double digits.

After that run by Frazier, the Blue Streaks would find themselves in a scoring drought that would last beyond five minutes. Luckily, for the Blue Streaks their great defensive effort wouldn't let the Lions get any closer than seven. The drought would end with a Chicone free throw. A pair of Raynor layups and another Fitzgerald three would send the Blue Streaks into the break up, 32-18.

The halftime talk consisted mostly of how while the team may be playing better compared to the first half of last night's game, no one should be contemptuous and there's always room for improvement.

Coming out of the half the teams exchanged possessions and made shots but the Blue Streaks managed to slowly add to the lead. A Frazier three and a pair of free throws from Brandon Rose would extend the Carroll lead to 20.

However, that would be as big of a lead they'd be able to get, as a six minute, 15-0 run by the Lions would follow. The run got the home team to within five with eight minutes of game time left. A trio of Yontek layups quickly halted the run and started to shift the momentum back to the Blue Streaks. By the 4:17 mark, the Lions managed to cut the lead to 13, but that would be their last score of the game. Chicone and Frazier free throws as well as a Raynor layup would close out the scoring in the game for either team.

Will Yontek and Luke Frazier led the Blue Streaks in scoring with 15 points each to help the Blue Streaks close out the 2-0 record on the trip. Chicone and Raynor contributed to the score with 11 and 10 points respectively.

"I'm really proud of us for getting two hard wins on the road. This team has a bunch of heart and it showed this weekend," said Luke Frazier regarding the effort it took to earn 2 wins on the road trip. "While 2-0 is a great start, this is just the beginning of a long journey this year. I'm incredibly proud of how all my teammates battled this weekend and incredibly proud to be part of a team with such a great culture." stated Will Yontek when talking about how important a start like this is, not just record wise, but also culture wise.

On top of the two wins Luke Chicone and Will Yontek were also named to the all-tournament team. Chicone earned Tournament MVP honors.

The Blue Streaks return home and will face the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Saturday, November 16 in what will be the first game played at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in the new season. Tip-off is currently set for 3 pm.
