Home Loss to ONU Ends 19-Match OAC Unbeaten Streak for Women's Soccer

The Polar Bears take home the OAC Regular Season Championship with the win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A lengthy streak ended at the wrong time for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks entered on a program-record 19-match unbeaten mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play. JCU needed to extend the streak by one match to secure the OAC Regular Season Championship.

Ohio Northern had other plans. The Polar Bears handed John Carroll a difficult 2-0 defeat at Don Shula Stadium in the final match of the regular season.

The campaign is certainly not over for the Blue Streaks. JCU has clinched the #2 seed in next week's OAC Tournament, and will thus host the second-lowest remaining seed in the semifinal on Thursday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

From early on in the match, Ohio Northern dominated possession. Just a couple minutes into the contest, ONU got an indirect free kick, and from there kept Martin busy. The sophomore netminder turned away several chances, and other ONU opportunities became near misses, particularly a shot off the corner kick that clanged off the crossbar about 19 minutes into the contest.

Thanks to smart play by Martin and the Blue Streaks, JCU kept ONU off the scoreboard. But as the stats say, it was just a matter of time. The Polar Bears outshot JCU, 10-0, and 4-0 in shots on goal. And ONU held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 54th minute, the visitors broke through at last. Kylie Cabana did the honors for the Polar Bears by tapping in a shot off a corner kick.

In the 74th minute, the Polar Bears provided the insurance goal to seal the deal. It was a header by Jill Roberts off a free kick by Emma Bowman that did the trick.

John Carroll looked to respond, but could not muster any shots on goal. ONU finished with a wide advantage in this category, 10-0, and in shots on goal, 20-3.

Despite the goals allowed, Martin played well in net, making 7 saves.

JCU's previous conference unbeaten streak was 10, from 10/13/2001 to 10/26/2002. JCU's last conference loss was way back on October 22, 2022.
