Men's Basketball Drops First Defeat of the Season to Johns Hopkins

The Blue Streaks lost their first game of the Great Lakes Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Blue Streaks made the trip up to Michigan for the Great Lakes Invitational, one of the premiere showcases in Division III basketball. In the first game of the two-day event John Carroll was matched up against a very solid Johns Hopkins program.

In a game where the Blue Streaks struggled to get anything going from deep and ran into some adversity, it was Johns Hopkins who would come out on top, 84-69.

The Blue Jays started out the game on a 15-2 run in the first seven minutes of game time thanks in part to a trio of three pointers. Two Luke Chicone free throws and a pair of layups from Chase Toppin would halt the run and give John Carroll a bit of momentum, which was quickly taken back by another pair of Hopkins threes.

The Blue Jays continued to build on their lead and take advantage of the John Carroll mistakes. The final five minutes of the half would play out the same as the first fifteen, and the Blue Streaks would find themselves down 40-25 at the half.

The message at halftime was simple, we've been here before and everybody knows the team is capable of making a comeback. Everyone just needs to increase their intensity levels.

Coming out of break, the teams traded buckets with the Blue Jays going on mini runs, getting their lead to as large as 19 but the Blue Streaks always countered and never let the game get out of control.

Two Brandon Rose three pointers – the team's first triples of the night – lit a fire under John Carroll and started to swing things in their favor. The Blue Streaks began to chip away at the lead and cut the deficit to six with just under five minutes remaining thanks to the offensive efforts of Chase Toppin, Henry Raynor, and Luke Frazier. However, a controversial call after an excellent defensive effort by Rose would swing the momentum back to Johns Hopkins.

From there, the Blue & Gold wouldn't be able to get any closer and a Hopkins run, capped off by another three, extended the lead to 12 with two minutes and sealed the deal.

The 15-point loss saw John Carroll going just 2-of-23 from deep and 23-66 from the field overall.

The Blue Streaks look to bounce back tomorrow against #8 ranked Emory. Tip-off is at 5:30 and once again to be played at Calvin University.
