Women's Basketball Rolls by Raiders to Begin Conference Play

JCU did well in the paint to get the program's 7th straight win over the Raiders in Alliance

ALLIANCE – Even without the benefit of an advantage in the 3-point department, John Carroll Women's Basketball finds ways to win in dominant fashion.

In the first game of the Ohio Athletic Conference slate, the Blue Streaks rolled to a great victory at rival Mount Union on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Streaks roared to a strong start and never looked back, firing out to a 71-58 conquest of the Purple Raiders on the road. The victory marks the seventh straight win in Alliance for JCU Women's Basketball, as John Carroll has won 12 of the last 13 matchups in the series.

You couldn't ask for a much better start as the road team, as John Carroll burst out to a 13-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the ballgame. With Ava Ryncarz, Maddie Pietrowski, and Grace Semptimphelter chipping in points, JCU stretched the deficit to 22-1.

Mount Union did not notch its first made field goal until the 2:09 mark of the first quarter. A late Raider triple narrowed the gap to 24-7 at the end of one.

The high water mark for JCU occurred at the 7:35 mark of the second quarter, as Abigail Rosol pushed the margin to 19 points, 30-11, with a fast break layup. From there, Mount Union slimmed the margin, but not below double digits, as triples by Ava Ryncarz and Brooke Laub kept JCU up big. Laub's 3-pointer with under a minute left in the half set the margin at 41-28 at half.

While JCU did not hit triples in bunches, the visitors converted often enough to keep Mount Union honest. But while Semptimphelter and others did strong work, a late trey by the hosts cut the margin to 11 points (54-43) at the end of three.

For the first time since the opening minutes, Mount Union got within single digits early in the fourth quarter. But Ryncarz immediately responded with a jumper, setting off an 8-3 JCU mini-run. The Raiders threatened, getting within eight points at several junctures, but it was never really in doubt. A Carly Perusek and-one helped salt away the game late.

Ava Ryncarz achieved a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, plus 4 assists. Graci Semptimphelter hit double figures in points for the third time in six games, notching 12, while also tallying a team-best 4 steals. Carmen Heuker (11) and Maddie Pietrowski (10) also aided the offensive effort well.

Mount Union sank 8 triples to JCU's five, but the visitors' wide advantage in points in the paint (40-25) tells the tale of this victory.
