Women's Swimming & Diving Cruises to Victory over Oberlin

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A future conference rival made the trip to Johnson Natatorium on Friday evening, and John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving took care of business.

Welcoming future North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College, the Blue Streaks put on a nice performance.

John Carroll roared for a 224-75 victory at home on Friday evening. 

Results

Audrey Sevald, Olivia Goodman, JJ Gowetski, and Mairin Dalziel got the show started on the right note. The quartet rolled for a dominant victory in the 400 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 4:03.75.

Ella Muzychak rolled to a wide margin of victory in the 1000 Free in the first individual event. The Magnificat product notched a time of 11:24.49, besting the field by over 30 seconds. 

Bree Shirkey started what became a strong evening in the 200 Free. The Hawken grad conquered the competition with ease in the event with a time of 2:01.10. Sevald then took a turn at the first-year party, getting a victory of her own in the 50 Backstroke (29.25). Taylor Hudson also impressed in second (30.05).

The Blue Streaks marked down a victory in the 50 Breaststroke. Olivia Goodman did the honors with a time of 33.24. Regan Gunzy followed closely in third at 33.94. Mairin Dalziel raced to a winning finish in the 50 Free, touching the wall at 24.46. Bree Shirkey also got top three, with a mark of 25.54. 

JJ Gowetski then anchored a podium sweep in the 100 Fly, as the rookie topped the lineup with a 1:00.23. Grace Roberts and Gabrielle Adamczyk completed the top three. 

After the break, Shirkey dashed through the water for a wonderful win in the 100 Free. The first-year notched a time of 56.12 to take the race, followed by Roberts in third at 58.70. Another victory ensued for JCU in the 100 Back. This time, it was Sevald who did the honors. The Akron native won the race in 1:01.88. Lauren Koppelmann – also the Music Director for the ISBC (International Student Broadcasting Championship) Station of the Year – notched second in 1:04.32.

Olivia Goodman, the pride of JCU Equipment, picked up a win of her own in the 100 Breaststroke. The star tore through the water in 1:11.31, while Gunzy took third in 1:14.20. JCU kept on winning in the 500 Free, as Muzychak snagged a win of her own. The Magnificat product nabbed a winning time of 5:38.01. Once more, JCU marked down a win, this time in the 50 Fly. Roberts did the honors this time with a time of 27.63, followed by Adamczyk in second in 28.17. 

Dalziel showcased her range in the 500 Free. The adroit junior won the 500 Free by nearly 10 seconds with a victorious time of 5:28.57 after winning the 50 Free earlier. 

The wins kept coming in the 50 Fly and 100 IM to close out the individual events. Roberts did the job in the 50 Fly with a time of 27.27, with Gowetski taking care of business in the latter event in 1:03.52. 

John Carroll closed out the competition with a nice win in the 200 Free Relay. Shirkey, Gowetski, Roberts, and Dalziel snagged the top spot with a time of 1:41.67. 

In the diving portion, Annie Meunier won the day. The Plainfield, IL native bested the field with a score of 204.75 in the 1 Meter Diving, and then a mark of 159.38. Haley Boyle (148.80) and Emily Brown (145.50) also provided points for the JCU score. 

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will be back in action a week from today. John Carroll will make a road trip, though stay in Ohio, heading to the University of Findlay, a Division II opponent.
