Cold Start Shooting in Ada Leads to OAC Tournament Exit for Women's Basketball

ADA— Playing in Ada is rarely easy, particularly in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

The home of the Polar Bears proved to be an especially tough atmosphere for John Carroll Women's Basketball in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal, as points were difficult to come by.

The Blue Streaks' 2023-24 campaign ended on Tuesday in a 73-59 defeat.

Scoring started slowly for both teams in the opening period. An Abigail Rosol layup and a Carmen Heuker 3-pointer helped to break the ice. But after a pair of Brooke Laub free throws at the 2:55 mark, the offense vanished.

A lid seemed to be on the basket into the second quarter for John Carroll, until Heuker hit a layup with 6:18 left in the second. But over the nine-minute stretch before that, Ohio Northern roared on a 16-1 run to take full control of the game.

The Polar Bears really put the game out of reach in the final six minutes of the half. Ohio Northern burst out for a 16-0 run down the stretch while playing impressive defense. At the break, the Polar Bears owned a commanding 40-16 lead.

John Carroll did not wave the white flag in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts, 20-14. Maddie Pietrowski and Ava Ryncarz helped to kickstart things for JCU.

But the Polar Bears didn't allow any thoughts of a comeback, keeping things out of reach despite JCU's 27 fourth-quarter points.

A poor shooting night early on doomed the Blue Streaks. JCU finished 33.9% from the field. Ryncarz topped the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds, marking her 19th straight game in double digits scoring and her ninth double-double of the year. Pietrowski tabbed 11 points.

The Blue Streaks finish 13-13 for a second straight season. This marks the sixth straight season of John Carroll ending .500 or better.
