Women's Lacrosse Falters at Home Against Wooster

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- John Carroll Women's Lacrosse battled all night long, but ultimately it was not enough to overcome a strong offensive performance by Wooster.

Wooster, John Carroll's third non-conference opponent on their schedule, seized control of the game before the sun had even disappeared beyond St. Ignatius Hall in the distance.

And thanks in part to the early start, the Fighting Scots delivered JCU a 16-10 loss at Don Shula Stadium.

The Fighting Scots held a slight 6-3 lead over the Blue Streaks at the end of the first period. The away team bookended the period with two separate 3-0 runs.

The Blue Streaks' offense came to life in the middle of the period as three different players found the back of the net. Kathleen Cagney scored the Blue Streaks' first goal inside Shula Stadium with 7:02 remaining. Kendall Gessner and Olivia Hanulak each scored as well, which cut the Fighting Scots' lead down to one. Hanulak capitalized on a free-position attempt.

In the second period, the Blue Streaks managed to cut into the deficit on the scoreboard. After failing to register a goal over the first seven minutes of the period, a pair of late goals by Anna Spitzer and Hanulak helped to swing some momentum in favor of the Blue Streaks. This marked Spitzer's first goal of the season. At the halftime break, the Blue Streaks trailed 9-6.

After picking up some momentum in the closing minutes of the first half, the Fighting Scots regained control of the game with a dominating third period. They outscored the Blue Streaks 4-1, including two goals in the final 2:30 of the period.

This was a pivotal point of the game and the Blue Streaks were not able to limit the damage late in the period. As a result, the Fighting Scots held a convincing 13-7 lead heading into the fourth period.

The Blue Streaks fought admirably in the fourth period, and did not roll over even in the face of a likely defeat. John Carroll began the period on a 3-0 run, fueled by Gessner's second goal and a quick two goals by Karson Martin.

That early period scoring run was promptly erased as the Fighting Scots slammed the door over the final nine minutes. They scored three more goals, one of which gave Morris a hat trick, to lift the Fighting Scots over the Blue Streaks by a final score of 16-10.

For the Blue Streaks, Cagney, Hanulak, Martin, and Gessner all scored two goals.
On the other side, Smith finished with three goals and Morris had a game-high four goals for the Fighting Scots.

JCU will be back at home on Friday, March 1 at 7 pm. The Blue Streaks will welcome Hope College.
