Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Hope at Home, Giving Shewbridge First Coaching Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – First career win has a nice ring to it.

Head Coach Kelsey Shewbridge '18G checked an item off the bucket list on Friday evening, earning her first victory as a head coach at her Alma Mater.

John Carroll Women's Lacrosse rolled at Don Shula Stadium on Friday evening, securing a 25-16 victory.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams took turns scoring. Kendall Gessner got the scoring started about five minutes into the game on a solo shot. After Hope's first tally, Gessner set up an Anna Spitzer tally. Following a Dutch goal, Vivian Rung rang one home. In response to Hope's next goal, Riley Knapp found twine on the woman-up to set the Blue Streaks ahead again. And on a buzzer-beater, Knapp found Olivia Hanulak on a big tally.

And so, the Blue Streaks held a two-goal lead for the first time, ahead 5-3 after one.

John Carroll kept firing into the second quarter, as Spitzer sank a free-position goal. Hope tallied two straight in response, but Spitzer prevented it from becoming a run. Following a Hope response, JCU managed a run with Gesnner, Hanulak, and Kathleen Cagney powering things. Two more late goals by JCU, the first on a Knapp free position and the second on a Gessner woman-up, set the Blue Streaks ahead at half, 12-9.

JCU came out strong in the third period, scoring five of the first six goals to build a 17-10 edge. The Blue Streaks outscored the Dutch 10-4 in the period, as Spitzer and Knapp combined for six goals.

Gessner added a goal with 2:09 left in the period, giving JCU a 22-12 lead and forced the running clock into effect.

Hope made a slight push early in the final period scoring four unanswered goals, but Schwartz scored with 7:13 remaining to put JCU up 23-16. JCU finished things off from there.

The shots were even as JCU totaled 38 to Hope's 33, however the Blue Streaks had 34 on goal compared to the Dutch who compiled 22 on target.

Sophomore Anna Spitzer enjoyed an amazing evening with six goals, a career best. Riley Knapp also showcased fantastic freshman skills with 5 goals. And of course, the veteran Kendall Gessner was great as always with 5 goals. Josephine Lawler and Rachel Kroeger each made 3 saves in net.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Sewanne, Tennessee, for Spring Break games against DeSales University on Monday at 2 p.m. and against Sewanee on Thursday.
