Senior & Alumnae Day Celebrated with a Win by Women's Basketball

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- A sunny Saturday afternoon was the scene as John Carroll Women's Basketball looked to bounce back after a conference loss to Baldwin Wallace.

With many of the program's prominent alumni in attendance for Senior & Alumnae Day, the Blue Streaks put on a show.

John Carroll's defensive intensity was able to propel the team to a 68-48 win.

"It's great to see some of the girls I used to play with. It's great to have a big crowd turnout for senior day," said senior Halle Landies. "It was just a great environment and a great team win."

John Carroll got out to a quick start early, as both teams came out enforcing a fast pace looking for opportunities around the basket. Playing well in transition gave JCU a 7-0 lead, as Halle Landies knocked down a three and Carmen Heuker scored a layup prompting a timeout. Zahkyria Walker was an early bright spot for the Quakers. Walker came out of the timeout ending the run scoring back-to-back layups of her own. Wilmington started to find its rhythm toward the end of the quarter. A three from Walker brought them within four with two minutes left. JCU ended the quarter with a narrow 17-15 lead.

The Blue Streaks set an emphatic tone defensively in the second quarter, flying around to force several turnovers. Maddie Pietrowski played a huge part, getting multiple steals. The Blue Streaks held the Quakers scoreless for nine minutes in the period. JCU went on a 12-0 run getting buckets from Ava Ryncarz, Landies and a three from Pietrowski. Wilmington finally broke the cold streak with consecutive buckets from Walker. John Carroll ended the half with a nice 33-22 advantage.

The Blue Streaks came out of halftime still looking to implement a fast offensive pace. JCU managed to extend the lead to 42-29 with five minutes to go. Both teams began to trade baskets after that. Pietrowski and Heuker hit jumpers for John Carroll. Bailey Eddleman and Cassidy Lovett got buckets for the Quakers.  Angela Vitantonio ended this barrage of baskets with a jumper of her own to force a timeout. John Carroll led 48-35 with three minutes to go. The Blue Streaks closed the quarter up, 51-35.

John Carroll came out in the fourth and maintained control of the game, but Wilmington continued to fight back. Eddleman cut the lead to 53-40 with a three point make, as six minutes remained. Wilmington showed a press to try and get more opportunities later in the quarter.

However, John Carroll closed the game with an 11-3 run, finishing the game on top, 68-48.

Zahkyria Walker led all scores with 18 points, Cassidy Lovett added 16 for Wilmington. Halle Landies topped John Carroll with 15 points. Maddie Pietrowksi finished with 14 and Ava Ryncarz ended with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win today, John Carroll improves to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. JCU will be back in action at home against conference rival Mount Union on February 7 at 7 pm. With a win on Wednesday, the Blue Streaks can clinch a spot in the OAC Tournament.
