Baseball Cannot Close Out In Losses To Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Despite having leads in both games, the John Carroll baseball team fell to Mary Washington 5-4 in Game One and 5-2 in Game Two at Dickinson Stadium to open up their annual trip down south to Virginia.

The Blue Streaks held a four-run advantage through the sixth inning in the first game, and a two-run lead until the fifth in the second.

Game One

JCU got on the board first in the fourth inning on a Bryce Holt double, scoring Jack Harmon who reached on an error.

The Blue Streaks struck again with a three-run fifth frame, started by a Gerorge Haracz two-RBI double. Harmon doubled to score Haracz in the next at bat to make it 4-0.

Mary Washington erupted in the sixth, as Tommy Martinez ignited the Eagles with an RBI single to get on the board. In the following at bat, Charlie Grove doubled to left field to score another run and cut the lead to two. This prompted a pitching change, as Henry Darrow relieved starter Frank Freeman.

Freeman pitched spectacularly, going 5.1 innings while allowing seven hits, one earned run, no walks and striking out five.

After Darrow got Alex Purgason to strike out, Oliver Martin mashed a two-RBI single to left field to knot the game at 4-4.

JCU had a chance to break the tie in the eighth when Logan LaMere reached on a fielder's choice and Michael Pollard singled. With two outs, both runners advanced on a pitching error but Sean Fritinger flew out to centerfield to end the threat.

The Eagles took the lead for good when Purgason pushed an RBI-single through the left side with two outs.

Looking for some last chance magic, John Carroll unfortunately could not muster any more offense as they were sent down in order in the ninth.

The Blue Streaks did outhit the Eagles, 11-9, and were led by Haracz, Pollard, Fritinger and pinch hitter Jack Beiter who each had two hits.

Darrow, who was charged with the loss, pitched the rest of the game and gave up just two hits and struck out three.

Game Two

Just like the first matchup, the Blue Streaks struck first in the third when Persichetti and Haracz scored on wild pitches to make it 2-0.

The Eagles soared for a four-run fifth inning on a Ryan Schwarz RBI-double, Burke Steifman RBI-single and Bobby Ayscue two-run homer all in consecutive at bats. Jamon Higley then came in for reliever Max Schumaker, who snuffed out any more threats by forcing a double play to end the frame.

Mary Washington tacked on their final run of the game on a Jacob Christenbury double down the left field line in the sixth.

John Carroll had their best chance to score in the eighth when Connor Mayle and Harmon were on with one out. After Mayle was caught trying to steal third, Harmon moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, pinch hitter Sean Connolly grounded out to second to end the inning.

Connor Hassan struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save for the Eagles.

Sylvan Wiley, who normally comes out of the bullpen, started on the hill for JCU and went the first 2.1 innings and allowed only two hits. Schumaker went two frames and allowed four hits, four runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

Higley threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing just four hits and the Eagles' sixth-inning run.

UMW's Gavin Riley limited JCU with seven strong innings and striking out nine batters.

Haracz went 3-for-3 with a run scored before exiting with an injury in the sixth to power JCU's offense while the team had eight hits.

Up Next

John Carroll will hope for some more luck in a single game against the Eagles on St. Patrick's Day. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
