Women's Tennis Beats Familiar Foe, Opening OAC Play by Beating Mount Union

MAYFIELD – With snow and cold hitting Northeast Ohio, the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for John Carroll Women's Tennis was forced indoors on Saturday night.

Whatever the venue, the Blue Streaks were ready for the Purple Raiders.

John Carroll stretched the winning streak to three, rolling to a 9-0 W over Mount Union at Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

Perhaps the story of the match was a familiar face switching sides. After a prolific playing career at John Carroll, Megan Reese occupied the No. 1 singles and doubles spots for Mount Union. The Jackson grad grew up nearby Alliance as a Massillon native.

A three-time First Team All-OAC selection at JCU, Reese dropped both her matches to her Alma Mater. Madeline Kavenagh and Caroline Chandler teamed up for a victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. And later on in singles, Kavenagh secured a big win for JCU by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati teamed up for just the third time at No. 2 doubles this year, and fired up an 8-3 conquest. Kayley Gimbel and Caroline Chandler enjoyed success together at No. 3 by a win of 8-3.

Evelyn Deren conquered her foe, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 to send Mount Union to the brink. Kavanagh's win sealed the victory for the Blue & Gold.

Sgambati (6-4, 6-2) and Gimbel (6-1, 6-4) had to work hard for wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Kolb (6-1, 6-1) and Chandler (6-0, 6-0) experienced less trouble at No. 4 and No. 6.

The Blue Streaks have a quick turnaround, heading to Meadville, Pennsylvania to face the Allegheny Gators on Sunday at 1 pm.
