Baseball Ends Florida Trip on a Winning Note vs. Pitt-Greensburg

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Florida trip ended on a positive note for John Carroll Baseball on Friday afternoon.

While the Blue Streaks lost the opening game to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 7-4, John Carroll rebounded with an 8-5 conquest in the second game of the twinbill.

Following the split, JCU returns home with a 4-5 record from spring break, and an overall mark of 4-7.

Game 1
The momentum from yesterday's sweep didn't carry over right away, as the Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. But the Blue Streaks did respond in kind.

Sean Connolly and Jack Harmon tabbed back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the second. Aided by a hit by pitch then an error, JCU got Connolly across. Harmon then scored thanks to a George Haracz RBI single. Michael Persichetti then notched a sacrifice fly to push the Blue Streaks in front, 3-2.

The lead was short-lived, as Pitt-Greensburg pushed in two runs in the third for a 4-3 advantage. Austin Miller and the Blue Streaks tamed the Bobcats for the next few innings, but the sixth inning was a different story, as Pitt-Greensburg added three key insurance runs. JCU did scratch across a run in the seventh, and did load the bases with one out. But the Bobcats garnered a flyout and a groundout to escape the jam.

Haracz finished a perfect 3-of-3, while Harmon tallied two hits. Miller was charged with the loss. Sylvan Wiley looked good in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Game 2
The bats roared early in the final game. Michael Persichetti set the tone with a double to open the contest, with errors aiding the effort. Connor Mayle singled and then Jack Harmon clubbed a 2-run single to gas up the Streaks for a 4-0 lead.

Pitt-Greensburg got one back in the bottom of the frame, but JCU doubled it in the second. Singles by Sean Fritinger and Persichetti, an RBI fielder's choice by George Haracz, and an RBI double by Bryce Holt stretched the margin to 6-1.

With Frank Freeman cruising on the bump, JCU added two more insurance runs in the fifth. Harmon hit a ball perfectly to the gap in right center for an RBI triple, and then scored on a Logan LaMere single.

The Bobcats threatened big-time in the bottom of the stanza. Pitt-Greensburg tagged Freeman for four runs, so Manager Bobby Bell went to the bullpen. Grad transfer Justin Sekerak entered with two on and one out, and stepped up to the moment. The Saint Ignatius grad garnered a double play on a lineout to Harmon to end the inning. The Bobcats got a couple more hits, but never truly threatened the rest of the way. For that, JCU had John Gavric to thank, as the senior snagged his first career save, of the two inning variety.

Holt, Mayle, and Harmon all enjoyed multi-hit games, as JCU combined for 12 hits. All of the nine starters managed a hit or an RBI, with eight players recording hits, four being for extra bases. JCU tallied four stolen bases.
