Softball Drops Pair of Close Defeats at Wooster

WOOSTER – In a preview of a frequent matchup in John Carroll's new conference, the Blue Streaks played very competitively against the College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

John Carroll's pitchers posted excellent efforts, but the bats couldn't generate enough electricity in two narrow losses.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 2-0 pitchers' duel in the opener before losing a heartbreaking walkoff in the second game, 3-2.

Game 1
Danielle Orendi got the nod in the opener and cruised in the first few innings. In the fourth, the Fighting Scots garnered some momentum, setting two runners in scoring position with one out. Wooster knocked in one on a sacrifice fly, but with some slick defensive work, JCU got the runner at second, 7-5-4, to escape the inning.

An error allowed a second run to cross in the sixth for the Scots, a significant insurance run.

Melissa Smith hit a double in the second, Kaylyn Odelli got to second in the third with a steal and single, and Kendall Trunzo reached second on a single followed by a passed ball, but none advanced further.

Orendi accepted the tough-luck loss with just one earned run across five innings, all while striking out five.

Game 2
Wooster took advantage of an error to start the game, scoring two unearned runs in the opening frame. But from there, JCU starter Kristin Dems settled into the game.

John Carroll threatened in the bottom of the first, as Melissa Smith doubled and Serena Paterno singled to set two runners aboard, but the Fighting Scots escaped unscathed.

Isa Crespo and Kaylyn Odelli singled in the fifth, but were left stranded. After four solid frames, Dems yielded to Casey Cash, and the sophomore performed admirably, leaving the door open for a JCU comeback.

And in the seventh, JCU's comeback hopes were realized. Crespo singled to open things on a Texas Leaguer to center, getting to second on a well-placed Laney Karpowicz sac bunt. Odelli walked and Kendall Trunzo walked to load the bases, which was perfect, as a Wooster wild pitch sent in a run. Elaina Rodriguez then hit a perfectly placed flyball to right field to score Odelli on a sacrifice fly. Wooster then got the third out to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, the hosts walked it off. A leadoff single spelled trouble, as the Fighting Scots got the runner to second on a sac bunt, to third on a wild pitch, and home on an RBI single.

Up Next
John Carroll will get back to OAC play, heading to Ohio Northern on Saturday for a twinbill. Tomorrow's scheduled non-conference road doubleheader vs. Oberlin has been postponed to next Thursday, April 18.
