Softball Scores Bigtime Win over the Polar Bears in Ada

ADA– After losing a number of close games and showing progress, the softball gods smiled on John Carroll today.

After a lopsided loss in the opener , the Blue Streaks caught a few breaks in the second game and walked away with a win.

The 7-3 conquest of the Polar Bears, who entered the day 5-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, ended a losing streak for JCU. The victory also marks JCU's first victory over ONU in Ada since April 2, 2017.

Game 1
The Polar Bears snuck across a run in the first. Isa Crespo singled to start the third for JCU, but was stranded.

Ohio Northern took full control of the ballgame in the third. The Polar Bears got four runs across, including a 3-run homer, to force a JCU pitching change. The bullpen couldn't contain ONU, either, as the hosts notched four more runs to stretch the margin to 9-0.

While ONU pushed across four runs in the fourth, JCU did not surrender in the following half-inning. Kaylyn Odelli singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. A Melissa Smith groundout then scored Odelli to get on the board. But ONU ended things there.

Game 2
The second game of the day was all about taking advantage of the opponents' mistakes.

Four errors proved costly for the Polar Bears, leading to a total of seven unearned runs for the visitors.

Kristin Dems got the starting nod for JCU, and got off to a tough opening, allowing three runs in the first frame. But from there, the freshman settled into the game and held the Polar Bears at arms' length.

While Kendall Trunzo doubled in the first and Melissa Smith got to third base in the second, it was Laney Karpowicz who first crossed home for JCU in the third. The Broadview Heights native reached on an error and later scored on an Elaina Rodriguez RBI sacrifice fly.

The fourth inning is when the magic happened for the Blue Streaks, as it was a parade of singles that did the trick.

After a Melissa Smith walk, an ONU error sparked the fun. After the fielding error, JCU strung together five straight singles. Taylor Morrisson, Karpowicz, Odelli, Kaylyn Odelli, Trunzo, and Rodriguez all tallied basehits, and then Gabby Hougan reached on an error to plate one more.

By the time the dust settled, the Blue Streaks had scored six runs and took over control of the ballgame.

Ohio Northern certainly did not surrender, realizing the implications of a conference defeat in what is shaping to be a tight race for a top four spot in the standings. But the JCU pitching did not waver.

Dems stranded two Polar Bears in both the fifth and the sixth innings, handing over a 7-3 lead for Danielle Orendi to finish off in the seventh. The veteran opened things with a hit by pitch, but then dispatched the hosts in order for a bigtime win for JCU.

The Blue Streaks' 13 hits tied a season-high for the team. Both Trunzo and Rodriguez finished 3-for-4 for the Blue Streaks. Dems picked up her first career victory.
