Polar Bears Bury Blue Streaks in Key OAC Sweep

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Baseball entered the weekend riding high with lots of momentum, but that didn't help today.

The Blue Streaks suffered a pair of difficult losses at Schweickert Field at the hands of Ohio Northern. The visitors scored a pair late to win the opener, 5-3, and dominated from the start in the second game, 11-4.

JCU drops to 4-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play with the defeats.

Game 1
The opener had a slow start. It was a quick first inning for both teams, as each had one base runner that never got past first base. An opportunity came in the second for the Blue Streaks as they got a runner in scoring position, but a sliding catch up the middle by second baseman Zane Pratt ended the inning. The third inning was more of the same as both the Polar Bears and Blue Streaks went down 1-2-3.

The top of the fourth frame opened up the scoring. JCU starter Frank Freeman was able to get the first two outs, but Ohio Northern took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from both Robbie Read and Andrew Stechschulte. Freeman was able to get out of the inning, stranding guys on second and third to limit the damage.

John Carroll looked to battle back in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff double from Erik Daugenti. A groundout moved Daugenti to third but a big strikeout for the Polar Bears, who currently lead the OAC in strikeouts per 9 innings, made scoring this run a challenge. Fortunately for the Blue Streaks, Connor Mayle stepped up and willed the ball into fair territory, landing inches from the right field foul line, to cut the lead in half.

The top of the fifth was a confidence booster for Frank Freeman, as he was able to make a big play on a bunt to get the guy at first. Despite a bloop single, Freeman worked to get the next two Polar Bear hitters and finished with a relatively quick inning.

The Blue Streaks were holding onto the momentum in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, JCU had runners at the corners for Erik Daugenti, who rocketed a liner up the middle and tied the game up at 2-2. Jack Hutchins managed to work out of another first and third jam and keep the game even.

Freeman was able to get two quick outs after walking the first batter in the top of the sixth, but Andrew Stechschulte lined a ball to right field to score the run from second and reclaim the lead.  Freeman was able to get the third out, but he was going to need the help from his offense again in the bottom half of the frame.

Luckily for Freeman, Mayle and Luke Chlystek came to play with the two of them going back to back with doubles and tying the game back up at three.  That would be all for John Carroll in the inning.

Two singles to start off the top of the seventh knocked Freeman out of the game, and on came Owen Gerba inheriting a first and second situation. Gerba felt no pressure as he came in and set down the Polar Bears in order to fire up the dugout heading into the bottom half.

After both teams got through the eighth scoreless, Sylvan Wiley replaced Gerba in the top of the ninth. Two walks and a wild pitch started the inning on a tough note. Back-to-back sacrifice flies scored two runs. Roger Simon struck out Logan Stevens for the third out but the damage had already been done.

Michael Perschetti reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to third after a wild pitch and error. However, the third out was recorded shortly after, and the game ended 5-3.

George Haracz and Erik Daugenti led the way for the Blue Streaks, each going 3-for-5. Connor Mayle also had a big game going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Owen Gerba's big relief performance was electric and kept John Carroll in the game until the end.

Game 2
The Polar Bears' bats continued where they left off. Ohio Northern fired up the bats for four runs in the opening inning. Two more followed in the second frame, as the visitors hit a two-run bomb over the fence in right center for a 6-0 lead.

Henry Darrow kept the ONU bats quiet for a couple innings, but the Polar Bears soon added more insurance runs, tallying a pair in the fifth and three runs in the seventh.

The Blue Streaks threatened in the bottom of the seventh, placing a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. But ONU tabbed a flyout and a lineout to get out of the jam. In the ninth, JCU got on the board, thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a bases-clearing Logan LaMere double to deep center.

Next Up
John Carroll will look to hit the reset button before Monday, as the Blue Streaks will head to Delaware, Ohio to confront future conference foe Ohio Wesleyan.
